The weirdest thing to me is that his comedic style has always been about embarrassing himself as much as possible to make himself the butt of the joke. It’s what his characters were most known for. Now he’s just been doing it in real life and it’s hard to say whether he’s doing a bit again or that his characters being these oblivious, completely self-unaware assholes was a reflection of his true self. But then wouldn’t it take self-awareness to realize his own lack of self-awareness?
The conclusion seems clear. He’s just an asshole and the lack of self-awareness thing was his way to turn being an asshole into comedy that he could make money from.
He's always been like this. I remember watching the DVD extras for one of his early specials (if that gives any indication of how long ago that was) and realizing it's not a bit - he's just like this.
Maybe he has a humiliation kink
