Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Yesterday at the White House, Venezuela’s opposition leader María Corina Machado, who was awarded the prize late last year, gave her medal to the POTUS in recognition of what she described as his committment to Venezuela’s freedom. This came after Trump greenlit an American operation that has seen Venezuela’s leader Nicolás Maduro arrested and taken to the U.S.

I swear I recently read that Machado was opposing dicktater. What the fuck happened? The fact she seems to be coddling him makes me question why she even got it in the first place.

edit1: you can't write this stuff... she literally got the prize for, "her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy." I guess she is like every other power tripping fuck that gets a whiff of money.

edit2: I can't find any news on her opposing him, I must have hallucinated that. It seems this peace prize thing was to schmooze him into backing her, I guess.

She actually looks like Heath Ledger's Joker, who just blew up a hospital and wiped off the makeup

machado looks like the jonkler

She's a neoliberal. Neoliberals are NOT opposed to dictatorships. They are opposed to anything other than neoliberal capitalism. They are opposed to authoritarian socialist systems, but they absolutely will also oppose a democracy that they consider to be not capitalist enough. Friedrich Hayek, one of the architects of neoliberalism was very clear on the matter:

At times it is necessary for a country to have, for a time, some form or other of dictatorial power. As you will understand, it is possible for a dictator to govern in a liberal way. And it is also possible for a democracy to govern with a total lack of liberalism. Personally I prefer a liberal dictator to democratic government lacking liberalism.

There’s no need to attack her appearance. Her actions describe her nature just fine.

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 0 points 2 months ago

I will absolutely attack a narcissist's appearance, that's one of the only things they actually care about

I think what you saw was that Trump didn't support her (still doesn't it seems). I recall her coming out hard for Trump when he kidnapped Maduro.

Do you literally not remember all the times world leaders have lined up to award & praise Trump to try to get their way? That's just sensible foreign relations by world leaders who understand the type of shallow, transactional idiot Trump is. Without insight about Machado, how does this look any different to you?

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Are my edits not showing up or something? Someone else commented what I had already edited in.

I misremembered a story about Machado, then I linked an article that corrected me. I never said this looked different, just that you can't make this shit up and compared her to literally everybody else.

I never said this looked different,

Your question

What the fuck happened?

pretty much did unless you're assuming that peaceful pragmatism[^pragmatism] is incompatible with a peace award (in which case, that's daft as hell).

[^pragmatism]: by trading meaningless trinkets to bid one's time with a geopolitical threat (with a 4 year term) & minimize conflicts that you're in no position to win & will hurt your people

[–] phaedrus@piefed.world 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Again, see my edits. My initial comment was based on something I remembered incorrectly, and then I corrected myself.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 0 points 2 months ago

Your edits address nothing I wrote. That you think they should (when they really do the opposite) indicates poor reading comprehension.
