I'm down. But only because the ID won't have my photo on it anymore. Down with photo IDs.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I've genuinely never heard that before, why, if I may ask?

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Because their primary purpose is to allow the state to surveil you. Which I don't think is good.

[–] Godric@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Well, yeah, that is the primary purpose, but I don't see how one can effectively have a modern state without Photo ID. I loathe surveillance, but I accept minor infringements upon me that I recognize as necessary for the sake of us all in many areas. Sorry if I'm explaining poorly!

I envision replacing the state's central ID databases with a federated system of ID verifiers who have trust among each other and who are run by their members democratically. That way you can choose a verifier that you trust to keep your data private but can vouch for your among broader society.

Very similar to the way the fediverse works. I have my account along one instance, but other instances allow my identity as LibertyLizard to exist as a quasi-account elsewhere so that I can interact with everyone, and so everyone knows I am me. However my true identity does not need to be known for this to work.

Mhm and how threw a photo? Dear user do you use a mobilephone?

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Photo allows them to ID you more easily. No photo would be a step away from the papers please society we live in today, even if it's not all the way there.

This you? https://thenib.com/mister-gotcha/

Yeah that is the point of an ID?? Okay how else would you identify (id) people without a picture, so you know the person in front of you is who they claim to be?

Edit: clarifying ID means = identify/identity

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net -2 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

That's the neat part. You don't.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Cool cool and how do you now operate variouse systems, contracts, memberships, crime fighting, investigation, secure democratic processes so no voter fraud happens, health care, all kinds of social payments, licenses to drive?

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

We already have ways to verify identity without IDs, you just don't think about them that way. The entire internet is built on them.

For important things like driver's licenses or voting where everyone has an interest in your identity being confirmed, we could have a federation of identity verifiers which you could voluntarily choose between, and which maintain trust between each other and with their members. That way you can choose one you trust who says to everyone else "yup, this person is licensed, etc."

Very similar to how the fediverse works.

knowing the people around you seems like it makes all that work

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Oh ok so we'll all just get to know 300 million people individually.

Smart.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)
[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

How? It's quite literally what you just said.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

no it's not. you're not around 300 million people.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

You just said knowing everyone around you makes those things work.

[–] commie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

and you're not around 300million people
