personally I think that there is absolutely no way they've been working on it for that long. with online being such a cash cow any development they may have started was probably shelved until like 5-6 yrs ago?

Depends. There might have been scrapped versions, etc.

Looking at StarCitizen where the development was and is faaaaaaar more public it's an interesting insight, even if just as one data point.

Things were built, tried and scrapped several times. It is in many cases the right iterative way of working and costs time.
