Sure, Midwest USA can't grow plants that require the California climate. But they could definitely grow other crops for human consumption instead of just corn or soybeans for ethanol and animal feed. Think oats, quinoa, chickpeas, lentils, peas, other types of beans, or pretty much any other "healthy" grain you can find at a whole foods.
