people conflate 2 kinda of liberal: liberal is the same root word as liberty, libertarian: liber, which basically means free

economic liberal (like the australian liberal party) means free from government interference in business/economy. it’s basically libertarian

socially liberal means free from government interference in your life (ie liberty; government says nothing about lgbtqi+ unless it’s about protecting you from discrimination)

in the US in particular “liberal” has tended to means socially liberal (at least in how they campaign) but neoliberal economically (pro big business)

socialism is actually diametrically opposed to economic liberalism
