Both Google and Apple Maps went along with “Gulf of America,” unfortunately, so we’re going to have to see.

One thing to note, with Gulf of Mexico he actually had Republicans pass a bill to do the change.

This one is an executive order. An executive order is what the name implies. It is not a law, but an order for executive agencies to follow. So while employees of agencies like FBI or IRS are instructed to call the lake as lake America, as far as the rest of the country is concerned the lake is still the Lake Ontario.

It's clearly is a stunt to distract from the pedophilia and a failed war.

No, the gulf was also only an executive order. There was a bill that passed the House, but the Senate never took it up.

Looks like I missed that, my bad. Thanks for correcting.

Ok, so what Google and Apple did was pure ass kissing.

Kinda yes, kinda no.

They don’t manually update that. They pull from the US Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System (USGS GNIS). That system got updated with the executive order.

The kinda yes is that they’re not legally obligated to use that data, like federal agencies are. They just use it for consistency for all users within the US, and for the fact that it’s freely available and the most detailed data for the entire US. The could have manually kept it the Gulf of Mexico, but they have a pretty consistent record of following whatever the federal government of a location does. At least Apple does, idk about Google as much though I imagine they’d do the same.

With the minor side effect of fucking with the economies and well being of the people in 2 countries...

Sure, but why should he care, he is making killing. Last year he made 4 billions that we know of.

Just to put in perspective, before he became president there was a lot of evidence that he wasn't a billionaire as he claimed, now he definitively is.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 4 points 17 hours ago

Then maybe the world should stop celebrating his "winning" and instead consistently point out he is a fraudster that should be either jailed or executed

The Open Street Maps website doesn't show the name of the gulf for me, but CoMaps shows it as Gulf of Mexico. I should find a way to uninstall Google Maps.

USA appropriating the name of the entire continent is so dumb.

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 39 points 1 day ago (3 children)

From what I understand, they've only changed that for the Americans.

In Australia, both Google and Apple Maps say 'Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)'

[–] FaceDeer@fedia.io 35 points 1 day ago

Same here in Canada. Really wondering if they'll do the same for Lake Ontario, I suspect that's going to go over very poorly.

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 16 points 1 day ago

Same in the UK on google maps. Pathetic and spineless.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 10 points 23 hours ago

"They only openly embrace fascism in one country." No, fuck us and fuck our capitulating corporations. Don't let them think that you'll let them do the same to you.

Those guys were invited to his inauguration. So yeah.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 2 points 18 hours ago

They paid for it

[–] driving_crooner@lemmy.eco.br 6 points 23 hours ago

They geo localize the maps as your government position. Users from different countries see different political borders in contested land.
