Veteran justice, 76, was treated for dehydration in March; a retirement would give Trump new chance to shape court

US supreme court justice Samuel Alito was reportedly taken to a hospital after becoming sick at a Federalist Society dinner in Philadelphia in March, further fueling speculation that Donald Trump could have more chances to shape the land’s highest court through new appointments.

A CNN report said Alito was checked by medical staff and given fluids due to dehydration. He later returned to his home in Virginia that same night with his security detail. In the weeks since, Alito has resumed his duties, including participating in oral arguments.

The supreme court’s public information officer, Patricia McCabe, confirmed the incident and shared a statement with the Guardian that said, “On the evening of Friday, [20 March], Justice Alito felt ill during an event in Philadelphia. Out of an abundance of caution, he agreed with his security detail’s recommendation to see a physician before the three-hour drive home.”

That shithead trump getting a fourth SC Justice would just be so fitting for the time we're in.

[–] Peekashoe@lemmy.wtf 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Since now four seems possible, this timeline means we'll probably lose one of the liberal justices as well for an even 5 picks, and a 7-2 court.

Court sizes have shifted before, they can shift again.

The court should be increased to the current number of federal districts like it was intended, before Congress started fucking with it for political reasons. That would be 12.

[–] dhork@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

DC technically has its own separate district Court, so there are technically 13 districts.

  1. No way both him and Thomas dont retire before 2028.
[–] baronvonj@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

I think they'd wait until after November, though. Doing it suddenly before the election would be a clear signal they expect to lose. So they'd try to ram it through in December, before the new Congress is sworn it.

If there were any justice in the world he would not retired but die in January 2027 and after the democrats took the house and senate (?) they would just left the vacant empty until the next president.

Lmao, nice joke. The democrats would just approve whorever Trump present.

If Democrats get control of the senate, we can at least hope Trump is forced to nominate a moderate conservative. Alito and Thomas are unhinged.

There's too many conservatives on the court as it is; a moderate conservative in this political landscape is just a regular conservative who would still vote on partisan lines on most issues.

The Republicans deliberately waited out Obama's term to appoint Gorsuch to the court, so if the Democrats had any backbone whatsoever, they would be entirely justified in doing the same to any Trump appointee if in control of the Senate.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Sure, but they don't have a backbone. I'm just saying it would be hard to find someone who's not an improvement over Alito.

[–] ButtermilkBiscuit@feddit.nl 5 points 1 week ago

You bet your ass if it's serious he won't wait for midterms to retire, he'll do it now before Republicans get crushed in the midterms. Unlike the moderates on the court the pedo clan is playing for keeps. They understand the assignment and won't wait until they croak during a democrat controlled term. They'll fight dirty and steal seats if they need to. Ask that cocksucker Bitch McConnell.

[–] justalittleguy@lemdro.id 4 points 1 week ago

The hardest part is they'd need 52 seats at least, to negate the likelihood in a 51-49 situation that Fetterman joins Rs so Vance can tiebreak.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Alito and Thomas are ~~unhinged~~ quite obviously and publicly bribed, bought, and paid for.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think Trollito is a unhinged true believer too.

[–] stringere@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Thomas's wife, also.

Fuck that guy

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Would love to see Trollito out of there, but assmouth would probably nominate someone even worse.

$5 says Trump poisoned him.

[–] CobraChicken3000@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 week ago

Alito is such a bootlicker, I bet he poisoned himself

[–] TryingToBeGood@reddthat.com 3 points 1 week ago

I’m thinking food poisoning
