It is a great game.

You'd never guess the depth by Screenshots. It's also available drm free and runs locally/lan.

And the mods....

Just try Calamity.

You will never thank me, I'll be forgotten.

Try Calamity after playing through vanilla imo. Calamity changes up a lot.

I'd also recommend Fargo's. It's quite fun as well, though it's true final boss is some bullshit.

It's "one of those" games, unique really.

This makes me think i have to give it a try at some point. I've heard about it for many years but never actually tried it.

I would say there is no other game like it, except hundreds of other devs thought it looked easy to copy their success.... and really, still... there is no other game like it.

Terraria is almost too much for me and my attention span. But starbound is really good if yoh already like terraria

[–] MirrorGiraffe@piefed.social 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I loved starbound early access but when they released it fully with a sloppy story slapped onto it, giving you a mech the first thing that happens and tons of dialog that can't be skipped I noped out.

Starbound was an example for how to not develop a video game. I feel like the have could have done a lot better if they spent more time trying to refine small parts of the game before building it out.

They wasted so much time redoing work because they developed on poor assumptions and then had to go rip out back out when it failed.

Oh, we played starbound during it's beta, I could have swore it never finished being made. I know it got worse at one point during the beta and then I didn't think they ever fixed that. It was kind of dissapointing because it felt like it had the potential to be really good. We still played it a decent amount in the state it was in at the time. But it was definitely partially finished. We should check out what they did since 1.3 came out, I think that was the last we played, when mechs first came out.

Edit: looking it up, it seems like that was still basically the end of development, but there are mods now to return it to the original much more fun version of the game instead of what ended up being released. I could try playing it with those mods, I really liked the original version of the game in beta.

15 years... i was there on day 1 of release...

[–] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Genuinely not trying to one up you. But I was so excited for the game I played the leaked alpha before it released.

I used to buy 4 packs of the game to give away.

[–] wopalopa@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

it was so long ago. i didnt know if it was leaked. maybe the one i got is one of those. i was a broke kid and piracy is the only way for me to get games.

i cant play minecraft due to motion sickness (i still do now) so terraria is a perfect game for me.

later, i send it to my friends but unfortunately they disliked it.

man, terraria was really something huh

[–] chunkystyles@sopuli.xyz 1 points 3 days ago

Most of the people I gifted it to never really got into it like I did.

I just checked my purchase history on Steam and a Terraria 4-pack (£4.49 total!) Is there on July 2011.

4.4 hours played :D

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 7 points 3 days ago

Your should try it again. I heard they added a couple of things.

Wish I could see my start date. I'm pretty sure I used a cracked client until I won a giveaway on a TF2 raffle site lol. May 4, 2013 though.

It’s about to sell one more. It’s such a fun game to play with friends.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I've put so many hundreds of hours in, more than any other game. I'll beat moon lord one of these days :)

[–] belunos@lemmus.org 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You haven't beaten Moon Lord yet? My friend, I have some bad news..

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

I usually just get frustrated and put the game down, then when I pick it up a few months later I start a new character. I've gone through everything else in the game several times over. Most recently I was trying to finish before the new content dropped at the end of January but I couldn't pull it off.
