Is it just me that I've only been invited to one wedding? Although my circle of friends is small, they all have partners, but only one is married. One of my friends has also been invited once to a wedding. Maybe it depends where one is from, but I've discussed with others that weddings are expensive. The cost of wedding these days could go towards the deposit to buy a house instead, which is a more pragmatic use of money. My friend's dad noted that it seems to be few who are getting married these days because of the cost.

So i see on on the Internet about people going on so many weddings and I'm like "either their social circle is big, or they are rich".

A song about cuckoldry at a wedding? Are all of my friends just super vanilla, or is that not a weird choice?

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 2 points 9 hours ago

Djs will play anything with a good rhythm to dance to, lyrics be damned.

[–] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 9 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

People just don't listen to song lyrics, it's bizarre.

[–] Not_mikey@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 11 hours ago

As Andre 3000 said in his wedding staple "hey ya"

Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance

We live in a world where the Republicans think that "Born In The USA" and "We're Not Gonna Take It" and "YMCA" celebrate their values.

"Never stop raging against the machine!"

"Dude, you are the machine."

Some of those who hold office

Are the same that burn crosses.

I would say Mr bright side is the most vanilla song you could play. It's like known for being the go-to song for basic people.

It's kind of about cuckoldry. It's also kind of a guy complaining about the friend zone. But I mean really it's just a teenage angst song about confused feelings.

It's too much of a banger to deny though.

I might be dating myself, but I’ve never known anyone who actually liked the song, besides my nephew for a week. Played it? Yes. It was on the radio for ages, after all. Enjoyed? No.

I might be dating myself

Self-love is a wonderful quality

It broke the record for how long it was on the UK top 100 list. That was in the mid 2000s IDK what the time frame is to have it be the popular song during weddings but that's why it gets played. I think also as a dj it's a guaranteed hit for the same reason even if it's not the bride or grooms absolute favorite song.

[–] Quokka@quokk.au 8 points 20 hours ago

I liked it, always preferred Andy, you’re a star the most but the whole killers lineup was enjoyable at the time.

[–] RidderSport@feddit.org 4 points 20 hours ago

I am born 99 and have never heard the song on radio. And while I love the early 2000 pop-rock/pop-punk stuff, I only got to know the song 2021. So for me it is still a banger. Though I really like the Killer's first album anyway

[–] velma@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 21 hours ago

It's a nostalgia thing for sure now.

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 9 points 17 hours ago

Or when the bride + father of the bride dance is "Daughters" by John Mayer. The song's about parental abandonment/neglect and the negative effects it has on kids.

Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in
Since the day she saw him walking away
Now she's left
Cleaning up the mess he made

Which makes it kind of an odd choice to dance with your loving father to.

I've been to 2 weddings in a row where they had "Bye Bye Bye" I don't think people really care about the lyrics

[–] FoxyFerengi@startrek.website 3 points 18 hours ago

Wasn't that song about n'sync winning financial freedom from Lou Pearlman?

[–] Bhaelfur@lemmy.world 5 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

My favorite was Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" being played at weddings.

[–] Gullible@sh.itjust.works 4 points 21 hours ago

Oh, eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww! I think a community to roast wedding playlists might do society a solid.

[–] troglodytis@lemmy.world 4 points 15 hours ago

seventeen tracks and I've had it with this game

I got a pay cut a few years ago. I make $3 less an hour now for more work, more scrutiny and worse managers after all the good ones called bullshit on the company and left.

That is basically it. Otherwise my best bet is to find another job when I know that every time I try I get nothing and people telling me I am overqualified so I should just stick with the place that tries to pay me less and less.

My new supervisor who makes less than I do was hired as a business analyst because she ran an instagram page for her family's business. That is it.

If you form a union, you can fight for annual raises

[–] subverted_per@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 21 hours ago

You know what, youre right!

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 6 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

The closest I’ve ever gotten to an actual pay rise was when I got a promotion at one job, and even then I got laid off six months later whenever the hospital was taken over by a different management company.

[–] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 3 points 16 hours ago

Yeah. Sometimes the only way to get the promotion/pay raise is to get a new job elsewhere. It sucks.

In my almost 40years, i ve been to a wedding once, my own

IME, that one, Just Dance, TiK ToK, Umbrella, and some ABBA (Voulez-Vous, Mamma Mia, Gimme Gimme!, for example) are staples at British weddings. I'm partial to Gimme Gimme, lol, but it's still not something I would dance to.

[–] Proprietary_Blend@lemmy.world -3 points 18 hours ago

I get a raise almost every time I ask for one.

Also where meme
