Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

Controversial opinion, but I'd probably pick Dark Souls 1. It's the one I'm most disinterested to play. DS2 is the outsider and has earned its accolades via that alone, plus it's the most experimental DS game, which is cool. DS3 has fun world building and good combat, or rather my preferred speed, so it beats DS1 in that regard too. DS1 wasn't particularly fun to play for me in comparison.

The others are one-ofs and have all brought something truly unique to their catalogue, culminating in ER which is arguably, next to DS1 maybe, the most influential Soulslike in existence.

What's your take?

I'd have to pick sekiro to delete. Not that I don't love it, but I'm too attached to all the mainline souls games. Also it doesn't have pvp and I'm a little invasion gremlin.

That and if we delete dark souls 1 we wont be able to play the remastest edition with bonus halo content and this hurts my heart.

I'll be playing a bit of Nioh 2 again.

As for a From Software game I'd permanently delete, I'd say this trailer speaks for itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG1HahKYZzc

~~The Adventures of Cookie and Cream, because who gives a damn?~~

Actual answer in the spirit of the question: DS3, on the assumption that doing so within this hypothetical doesn’t ruin From's finances. My reasoning is:

  • The faster pace was introduced and proven successful already by Bloodborne, so I think we'd still see that in From's other work afterwards

  • While I think that DS3's worldbuilding did work great when considered by itself, I also think that when considered as a part of the DS series it's a shame that it was so clearly From attempting to just put the series to rest and largely shoving aside the cool lore stuff that DS2 did

  • If it meant that we got a completely different continuation of the Dark Souls series I'd be more interested to see where that goes that any other option

Basically I'm sacrificing a very succesful game that I do think is great for what I hope is the benefit of the long term

Playing Dark Souls 1. First run since playing through all of the soulsbourne games. I've been sailing through so far (bandit's knife +15, target shield for parries and hornet ring) but am getting absolutely wrecked by Artorias. I missed him on my first run and my weapon barely hurts him so it seems I have a grind ahead of me.

If I had to delete one forever that I've actually played (so not demon souls or armored core) it would have to be DS2. I'm not a hater, genuinely love some elements of it, but the others are incredible and it's the one I least want to go back to

My friend and I just started playing nightreign. So far we like it but find it difficult due to the battle royal mechanic. My friend lives to explore so we end up forgetting and then getting consumed by the border.

If I had to delete one forever, it would be ds1. I enjoyed the game very much so, but I enjoy the newer titles more and could live without it.

Déraciné. It's a proper Fromsoft game released in 2018 with Miyazaki himself leading the development… It's also a jank-looking 5-hour Playstation VR game. I would not miss it. (Have any of you even heard about it?)

If we only look at Soulsborne games… That's hard, really hard. I would probably shamefully also go with DS1. I just don't have any nostalgia for it. Sure the first couple areas are nicely connected, but I'm far more excited to replay DS2 and DS3. Exploration and game progression and first and foremost gameplay feel are simply better there.

Also, if anyone deletes Bloodborne or Elden Ring, I'm breaking into your apartment with a Claymore! /j

I'm continuing my RL1 run in Elden Ring and I'm having a blast :) I thought maybe after playing it so often I would eventually get tired of it, but nope still love it and I have so much fun.

I've now played all the way to Godfrey (the real one) and beat him. Currently, I'm dying to Messmer. The Broadsword was phenomenal against Maliketh and Godfrey and decent against Gaius, but crap against Messmer - I have now pivoted to Star Fist against him.

DS1 has the best map. It feels a lot like the first resident evil where you get so far and unlock a door just to be back at the beginning. DS3 is the most polished as far as combat and just movement overall. Ive also found the mods for DS3 to be the best. DS2 is cool but definitely the most obscure of the 3. Id maybe argue its the easiest since you can just keep beating the enemies until thet stop respawning. Its a tough one but i think you could get rid of DS2 and you wouldnt miss out on much. Bloodborne is the hardest since the limited shield interaction but its definitely fun. Elden ring is great but is way to easy.

I’d delete Bloodborne so Sony can’t hostage the IP to sell underpowered hardware any more.

(Also I just… didn’t enjoy playing it. Go figure.)

I dont like your opinion so I'm mad at you now /s

Sony wants to remake/remaster/do something with Bloodborne. They're not holding it hostage, in fact they were ready to approve a Bluepoint remake. It's Miyazaki who refuses to let it happen. Bloodborne is dear to him and he doesn't want anyone else to touch it. But he also doesn't want to do anything with it himself at the moment. And so the status quo just keeps on.

For once, this is a point where corpo greed is not to be blamed. Which is odd, I know.

Rest in peace bluepoint, they did you dirty

I'd probably delete Ninja Blade. It's proper alternate timeline stuff - it was released within weeks of Demon Souls, but instead of being an inventive and groundbreaking new thing it is the most derivative amalgamation of CAG gameplay, blockbuster cutscenes, QTEs and brown-grey mid 00s graphics you can imagine. It's very easy to see why one failed and the other succeeded, but it's fun to imagine the alternative timeline where Ninja Blade was a smash hit, FromSoft are a notorious CAG developer now and Soulslikes don't exist. Well, maybe calling a timeline without Soulslikes "fun" in this community is flirting with danger but it is certainly interesting to think about.

EDIT: Also, DS1 has a map that's an absolute work of art. Genre defining and still the yardstick we compare every Soulslike to. If a new game has interconnected levels we say "it has a little bit of DS1-style..." etc. Exploring something like DS1 again is the high so many of us (I am one) keep chasing by playing this genre. Deleting that over other entries is crazy talk.

Probably won't be playing much of anything this weekend. The World Cup has been eating into my gaming time and I've also been otherwise distracted and not in the right headspace, really. I did play an hour of Lost Odyssey yesterday, but that's been the grand total of my gaming this week.

[–] MissingInteger@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I only know of Ninja Blade because of an Iron Pineapple video. Proper nightmare stuff if that had been more successful than Demon Souls.

Also, did you know the Moonlight Greatsword is actually in Ninja Blade?

[–] Coelacanth@feddit.nu 2 points 4 hours ago

Of course it's in there, it's a proper bona fide FromSoft game after all! And even you pick it up through a QTE! What could be better?

[–] mmf@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 hours ago

I refunded Dark Souls 3 on Xbox, because I couldn't pass the first boss. I was wrong... At least beat two more bosses on PC 😁

[–] eezeebee@lemmy.ca 2 points 7 hours ago

I'm thinking of giving Soulstice a go , partly because I was reminded I already have it when looking at the humble bundles (the one it was in just expired yesterday). It looks a little jank, but pretty alright.

I agree with your sentiment about DS1 and I think it hasn't aged as well as the others (which is why it deserves a remake, ahem Bed of Chaos), but I would probably choose Fromsoft's game METAL WOLF CHAOS XD because it looks like a bad Armored Core (I'd still try it though).

all of em. I'll delete em all willingly. never played these games and never will so yeah 👍
