"I'll write a whiny multipage diatribe to rage quit and insert a script to DDOS the instance that hurt my feelings. That's the behaviour of a well adjusted adult that's doing the right thing."

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 107 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Definitely the actions of a person who should be unquestioningly trusted to be the sole arbiter of determining what is fine and dandy and what goes too far on Lemmy. Totally not indicative of every legitimate concern that every single person opposing this brought up being accurate, surely not!

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 76 points 6 days ago (1 children)

My favorite reply from him when I called him out in a different thread: "why can't you just let people use their own computers how they choose"

I'm guessing he has never heard the wisdom of not throwing stones in a glass house. The cognitive dissonance is hilarious, though.

That dude is an unbearable cunt as a mod as well. I am absolutely not surprised for the fact that he is an unbearable cunt as a developer.

See this kinda thing is exactly why I'm still here. Some guy tried to use his software's popularity to manipulate and censor Lemmy, and it had the exact opposite effect in the end. His software got immediately forked, most instances(that I know of) stopped using/supporting it and the whole thing is getting memed to death so now the entire usernase knows about it and can specifically avoid this guy and all the software he maintains.

When this kind of thing happens on a platform like reddit or some other closed system, we can often suspect and sometimes experimentally prove that some kind of censorship or manipulation is happening, but it is way more difficult to detect and there's little the users can do about it.

Not here.

Here the users have the power, the knowledge, and the motivation to not only find problems like this, but to take collective action against them. You all have just proved it, once again.

Great meme!

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (4 children)

Plus I get to trot this out in every thread about it!

[–] gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works 122 points 6 days ago (2 children)

As a lemming, this whole drama is categorical censorial bullshit, but also peak comedy because the fuckwad got caught and publicly called on the carpet

As a software engineer, this is stupid implementation, because you can trivially make this a configurable blocklist of strings and regex. It never needed to even be an argument. Which of course means that it was never about the implementation.

As an open source enthusiast, take the software engineer response, but add: and he’s intentionally pushing his (visibly fucked up and warped) worldview and values onto users, and he tried to obfuscate it to be sneaky. That falls in the realm of malware imo - as in, intentionally mutating the functionality of a project with a specific intent of impact on users, and then attempting to hide the evidence. And then he got called out on it, and got super butthurt, and rage quit the whole goddamn platform.

TL;DR: Good fucking riddance.

Hello there, fellow Culture enjoyer.

The absolute cherry on top for me was the trigger: a good old-fashioned post upgrade debug session. Your TL;DR ++

He even tried to wash it off with "but there is a setting to disable it, just navigate 32 sub menus and click toxic mode" and never addressed the fact that his software would hide the shit behind a "technicall issue" excuse

As I gain a better understanding of how federated social media works, I just find it even more confusing. This dude appointed himself batman of lemmy, but he's just a single dev of a single frontend. Don't most instances have multiple frontends? Even if a secret block list was the key to getting lemmy to finally go mainstream (it's not), implementing it at a frontend level is simultaneously both way too wide and way too small of a net. If tesseract was the only way anyone could access lemmy, maybe a secret block list could actually change the winds, but it's such a small slice of the fediverse. It's like if batman was only beating up jaywalkers and was like "You're welcome, Gotham. The city is saved."

What was the point of any of it? Someone was inevitably going to discover it was happening. There were so many people on the block list. Was he just going to personally defend against the ranks of people he found annoying forever? Keep adding more and more regex as the list grows to multiple thousands of users? They're still on the platform, dude. It's just one filter on one frontend. What the hell are you trying to accomplish?

You nailed it! The impact was minimal. Its so many stupid hoops to get to his frontend. The root issue was keeping it a secret. And that's why everyone was clowning on him, with many users (myself included) wishing we were on that list.

Apparently that broke Admiral cucktits because his secret list of gay lefties didn't make him as cool as Batman. It made him like... Ketchup man or some 4th rate villain with a stupid gimmick, who thinks he's "protecting" Gotham by rubbing ketchup on all the street corners to stop robbers or some dumb shit.

[–] tutter@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 days ago

the ketchup imagery is absolutely sending me 😂

hmmm, i wonder who left the one downvote

[–] Aganim@lemmy.world 31 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Doesn't even need to be intentional. Voyager's mouse gestures make leaving an accidental downvote while scrolling way too easy for example.

I envy tesseract dev. Really. I have barely any determination and feeling of self worth; he had enough to cosplay head of house unmourned. Sadly for him, Lemmy knew how to kill a "god".

Again, another post celebrating that I’m on the blocklist and Charlie Kirk isn’t.

[–] db2@lemmy.world 40 points 6 days ago (6 children)

He's not saying anything about it though. 🤔

[–] ImgurRefugee114@reddthat.com 35 points 6 days ago (5 children)

Really proud of him for toning down the rhetoric. Guy hasn't said a racist thing since he last went viral.

Honest question, has he tried to defend the DDOS attack? Can’t imagine how one would justify that

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 32 points 6 days ago

It was especially stupid when everyone already was scrutinizing his code. Like users found his secret block list that was better hidden than this, and didn't think anyone would find the ddos code? What a freakin' moron.

The bots agree with me so it must be everyone else that is wrong. /s

I forget where but remember hearing a story once. If I hosted a banger of a party and everyone passes out at my house. I wake up the next morning to see a giant shit log in the kitchen sink and Joe says Jerry did it. I might be willing to hear Jerry out. But if I got 10 people say yeah Jerry is the one who took a shit in your sink. Well I'm going to be making Jerry clean my fucking sink.

oy vey-- I can be a real pill. but at least I can admit when I'm wrong. A lady/gentleman apologizes and exits stage left. One doesn't simply ragequit with a side of DDoS!

in all my years of slashdotting, Stumbling, Farking, Digging, redditry, and Lemming, I've never known anyone to go down this hard nor this bitter. WHAT A CUNT!

This beloved character's namesake deserved better

WHAT A STUPID ASSHOLE

Oh, egads! My Fediverse is ruined!

But what if... I were to censor it, and disguise it as a server error?

Ohoho, delightfully devilish, Patrick

Isn't doubling down on stupid takes a big masculinity flex in 2026?

All the alpha males seem to do it.

[–] 1984@lemmy.today 14 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (3 children)

Women do it, so nothing to do with masculinity.

Its just ego being hurt and both genders feel that.

Everyone’s wrong sometimes that’s just the stale croutons in this human ceasar salad they call “life”. It takes a special kind of grit to be such a massive dog-rocket when your wrong tho

Get used to it.

Anyone with a Claude Code account can spew out a Lemmy (or any other service) client and make antisocial changes and dump it in the App Store. ✨
