As one of those people I am decided not interesting in being represented by that...

I still have 32 GB of DDR in my drawer from when I upgraded to 64. I am too afraid to sell it because my current ram might break.

[–] FellowEnt@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 hour ago

128GB DDR4 3080TI rig from 2022 still going strong, I feel I timed this well.

[–] qaz@lemmy.world 2 points 34 minutes ago* (last edited 33 minutes ago)

Bought 128GB for €140 a couple years back, amazing deal looking back.

I bought my somewhat high-end PC in late 2025, two months before RAMageddon. Two people advised me against it. They said it wasn't a good time to buy because prices were already a bit high. I'm glad I didn't follow their advice.

I have a glorious 32GB of overclocked DDR3, how lucky am I.

Back in '22 I bought 64gb of ram because I wanted to have all my slots populated. For aesthetic purposes.

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 hours ago

Yup that's pretty much me.. "Well I've got these ports and RAM isn't expensive so let's go!"

Haven't yet needed it really but it's nice to know it's there.

[–] Bytemeister@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

Decommissioned VM host my company was getting ready to toss out.

It's all DDR4, but even that shit is expensive now.

[–] DrPop@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (2 children)

Ugh I have 16 GB and I decided to look uo how much it was cost to fill the other 2 slots, it is almost double.

[–] chris@l.roofo.cc 1 points 9 minutes ago

Four sticks of ram are usually worse than two with regards to speed. Just FYI.

[–] Stamau123@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

I was lucky I was able to get 16 GB a few weeks ago when some was on sale on Newegg, 'only' $255

[–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

"640K ought to be enough for anybody."

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

64GB, just because it was cheap enough. Also, back when I used Photoshop, it would take advantage of however much RAM you threw at it.

I hate myself for thinking that "no, I don't need an upgrade just because, I'm fine with what I have" one year ago (and I was also hesitant because of the dying CPUs on AM5). 32 ain't cutting it for me any more, I'm aiming for 96 or 128, but definitely not before this whole thing blows over.

[–] EowynCarter@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Bought new computer in September 2024, to play cities skylines 2.

So, thanks you CS2

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Before the rampocolypse I replaced 2x32GB sticks in my home server with 2x64GB sticks. I recently found I kept those 2x32GB sticks so I have 64GB of RAM sitting in my closet. I'm not sure if I should sell, or build something around that because I already have the most expensive piece now.

I got rather lucky with my purchase timing, tho I was just getting more RAM to deal with my 1300 Firefox tabs.

I live in fear one of the memories will stop working

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

I've lost a lot more than one.

I can't quite figure out the timeline of the jobs I've had. Memories of things that happened on those jobs don't line up with when I think I was on the jobs. I feel like I have the order all mixed up.

Recently, I was trying to remember the name of one of my old girlfriends. I can picture her clearly, but her name is gone. It will probably come to me at some point.

This is shit you think about when you get old. If you want to remember these things, start a journal, and keep it. You think you can't possibly forget, but you do.

(Yeah, I know you meant memory sticks.)

I did my rebuild before January 2025 cause I thought DJT was going to fuck up world trade, I underestimated how shitty the AI Bros are.

I have 16GB of VRAM too, baybee.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 18 hours ago

I keep telling my wife that. She's not buying it

[–] AllHailTheSheep@sh.itjust.works 3 points 19 hours ago

I just bought 24gb of ram (I work in IT and it's always good to have some extra 8gb sticks).

it got stolen since the USPS delivery person couldn't be bothered to follow directions and leave it inside. and I can't get my money back :(

I have three 32gb ddr5 PCs, trying to sell one for $600 but crypto bros keep offering $350 because "Chatgpt said so"

Price is 900 for mentioning ai

[–] libewa@feddit.org 1 points 4 hours ago

This reminds me of the screenshot where ChatGPT doubted a parts list the user gave it, because the RAM cost more than the CPU.

Edit: Its now an investment!

[–] aesthelete@lemmy.world 2 points 19 hours ago

My 2023 framework 16 is rocking 64gb.

And those of us with servers pray every day a stick won't fail. But at least people can talk to robots and make slop on demand...

[–] Dultas@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I have a backup R740 that I got in case I needed the extra capacity. It's my donor now, or could be my retirement plan since it has 256GB in it.

2024 I built my NAS with 2 x 16gb sticks, 2 x 32gb sticks for 94?gb of RAM. I got lucky.

Same with drives 14tb ironwolf pros, £200-220 each now £400+ each and I need 5 more of the fuckers.

[–] Yoddel_Hickory@piefed.ca 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

256 GB DDR4 here, kinda considering selling some of it now...

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago

Your RAM accidentally became a retirement fund.

[–] volore@scribe.disroot.org 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Wow, what'd you get all that for? Opening 5+ Chrome tabs?

[–] Yoddel_Hickory@piefed.ca 16 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The pc (server) was used, and the seller asked 100$ to double it from 128 GB to 256 GB.

More space for CFD and path tracing, and for personnal projects. Also it's fun to install games to a ramdisk for a laugh.
