Reading books about how to behave in social settings was very effective in reducing my social anxiety
"How to Make Friends and Influence People" is a classic that has a lot of examples. I listened to the audiobook
people like to recommend that book but its pretty bad advice for autists in my opinion. its way too vague and doesnt really lay out a central underlying thesis of human socialization, instead relying on the reader already having a basic grasp in the first place. we're all different but i find having an overarching theory to fall back on much more useful than a loose bag of recommended actions.
I agree that it's hard to put into practice for me but I disagree that it doesn't have a theory behind it - it's basically trying to meet other people's needs and interests in interactions. I think the thing that makes it difficult is not that it doesn't have clear advice but that I don't usually care about other people or interests enough and it feels disingenuous to pretend. It is kind of handy in work situations sometimes though
That one is great, as is “Emotional Intelligence”
"Wow, you have so much emotional intelligence" "Thanks it's a survival mechanism"
