New creators applying for YouTube Partner Program (YPP) will need 8,000 qualified watch hours in the last 365 days, or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days.

Old requirements for comparison:

1,000 subscribers with 4,000 watch hours in the past year or 10 million Shorts views in the past 90 days.

So while creators write direct film edit and record the content, what is it that YouTube actual does aside from playing ads?

Really gets my goat as a schmuck who did a good job once, have a video with approaching 100k and counting views, and not an ice cube’s chance in hell to get a dollar of that ad revenue any time soon lol

Hosting the content, providing the bandwidth. Being a concentration point for viewers. All of which does provide value and cost money. If it didn't, there'd be a million competitors. Obvious there would be no users without content, but there also would be no content without users.
