Oh no, your vacation to go watch TV in a hotel room is ruined..

Literally unwatchable.

[–] TomMasz@piefed.social 6 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

There's a reason for everything. Sometimes that reason is "I don't give fuck."

[–] LordMayor@piefed.social 9 points 15 hours ago

Maybe, it's on a hinged wall mount and someone just put it back wrong.

[–] Wizard_Pope@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Fuck. Did not see it at first. Screw you

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago

I don't see it...

[–] NuanceDemon@lemmy.world 9 points 19 hours ago

Depending on the type of mount this might just slide to the left easily.

I would never use a hotel TV by choice. When it happens, it's because there's literally nothing else to do in that moment. But even then, it's a struggle of shit quality, the most fucked up position in the room imagineable, unintelligible audio, and a bombardment of unskippale advertising.

Really, the only thing entertaining is seeing if any previous guests stayed logged into Netflix, then finding weird stuff to add to their 'Continue Watching' category.

[–] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

Last hotel I was in had streaming apps available. I could just log into my own account.

[–] FreshLight@sh.itjust.works 11 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I only use them if they have an HDMI port so I can play whatever I want on it.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 9 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

And nowadays they let you cast to them (sometimes). But even ones that were locked I've gone and just asked for the unlocked remote and maintenance has always provided. The hotel brand cares; the workers do not give a fuck.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 7 points 12 hours ago

Former hotel employee, can confirm.

[–] poopkins@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Cheap and portable Google TV stick with a Bluetooth speaker

[–] turtlesareneat@piefed.ca 8 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

We would come in from the beach or bars drunk, high, and overexcited, but knowing we had to sleep or the next day would be ruined. So we'd turn on a movie to fall asleep to. Unfortunately the last time, it was Addams Family Values, and my ass stayed up extra late watching the whole thing.

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 3 points 8 hours ago

Ah, yes. Classic case of "90's doom scrolling."

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 4 points 14 hours ago

I just plug in my AppleTV or Switch or laptop...

the issue is usually that you can't adjust the display settings for a more suitable picture

We haven't had cable in 12 years. Whenever we go to a hotel we specifically look for low quality reality tv with lots of ads. It's so ridiculous that it becomes funny and entertaining, for about 20 minutes that is.

I like finding movies on hotel cable. Many of the movies I saw when young weren't from going to the theater, but rather from walking through the living room after someone else put something on, or by flipping through the channels and landing on something that captured my interest. It's hard to get that experience nowadays. I'm more likely to get analysis paralysis from seeing all the films out there and end up rewatching the entirety of Futurama for the 200th time instead.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 14 hours ago

I used to watch FoxNews for shits just to see the wild shit they show, but recently the hotel I stay at most frequently no longer gets that channel. it was really disappointing, now I have to hope to catch criminal minds reruns or a random movie

[–] atomicbocks@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Try pushing on it. Half the time the mounts are basically rails so you don’t have to center the tv on the studs.

OP in 60 seconds: "how do I hide a TV that fell off the wall"

[–] TheKracken@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Honestly, good point. OP, could you be satisfied with this explanation? Maybe the interior designer did this as an homage to their favorite game of five years ago?

A little to the right... a little more to the right... anddddd... perfect.

I never bother the hotel TV. It’s rarely worth the hassle. If my wife and I watch something, it’s on the MacBook.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 8 points 22 hours ago

It's still THERE, every morning when you wake up.

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why not a streaming stick? You can watch anything you have at home, or jellyfin and also everything you have at home.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Well, my laptop bag has a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable in it. So that beats any streaming stick. Though the streaming stick doesn’t have to deal with overscan and other issues. It’s not a bad idea to add one to the tech bag. I’ll have to look into which ones let me do what I want.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 1 points 13 hours ago

Yeah, I do my laptop just because I always have it, since I'm always doing work in whatever downtime there is, people showering, whatever. Remote is nice. I have been lazy enough to remote desktop from my phone to the laptop to change things so I didn't have to get up. It is incredibly inefficient.

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Its so much simpler and you have a remote.

[–] cerebralhawks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 11 hours ago

Do you have a recommendation? I've had a Fire stick in the past, and it was a POS (I had the entry model, paid like 20 for it). Roku has been enshittifying lately and so has Fire OS. I'd want to be able to cast to it from the MacBook or my iPhone, or my wife's Android phone. I do have an Apple TV box at home, but I've never taken it to a hotel room.

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because not every hotel lets you connect to “home” or has internet good enough for a streaming service.

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

Of course you can connect to home, that's just using the internet.

I don't think I have been in one with such bad WiFi I couldn't stream in years.

If a hotel has bad wifi, and really most do (just not that bad) I would be black listing them immediately.

[–] W98BSoD@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Not everyplace allowed non-standard ports (ports other than 80/443).

[–] NewNewAugustEast@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 hours ago

Don't really need to, but you could get around that easy enough if you wanted to.

[–] Shimitar@downonthestreet.eu 4 points 1 day ago

The problem is you cannot unwatch this
