Why would they go critical if they touched?

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 52 points 2 days ago

"In 2011" is the real kicker. Not in 1952 or whatever when they might not have known better.

It's only gay if the Pu-239 rods touch.

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

It's not gay if they say 'no homo' tho.

If not dildo why dildo shaped?

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Just don't go for double penetration or you will be in for a bad time.

This was recently covered in detail on my favourite YouTube channel. Such great content, check it out: https://youtu.be/SVoo3tcYdr8

I wasn't ready for that bit about what happened to the Japanese scientists, and gobsmacked by how long they were kept alive and their suffering recorded.

I hope they lost consciousness pretty quickly otherwise that must be a literal hell.

that article was wild. thanks for sharing

[–] Aviandelight@mander.xyz 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That whole article is fucking terrifying.

[–] fake@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

The 'good' news is that criticality incidents like this aren't at risk of nuclear explosion or meltdown. The results are horrifying, but limited to the people in the immediate vicinity.

In 1948, the Atomic Energy Commission—the predecessor to the Department of Energy—declassified a study on gamma radiation’s effects on the blood of workers at Los Alamos National Laboratory, a key site in the development of the atomic bomb. But the agency’s insurance branch moved to block its release. The reasoning? It could shatter employee morale and “place a powerful weapon in the hands” of attorneys, who might file a lawsuit on behalf of sick workers. By then the government had also conducted experiments in hospitals—including one near its nuclear facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee—that intentionally exposed patients to radiation without their knowledge.

jesus fucking christ

[–] SharkAttak@kbin.melroy.org 14 points 2 days ago

Or interesting new way for union to management discussion...

[–] HerbalGamer@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You also saw that video about the fun accident huh?

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 42 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Not a chance. OP is just another bot reposting from reddit.

I'm 99% sure the user sanitation made this account when they started getting banned from communities for spamming. And it got a lot more active after their insane LLM rant about how Lemmy needs more reddit spam.

And if they do ever leave a comment, don't be surprised when it's pro-Russian

[–] yucandu@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

If I ever volunteer to fight Russia in war, it will be to eliminate all their bots fucking around with my free internet.

[–] Tramort@programming.dev 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Is there a news article for this!? This is insane.

[–] SpiderShoeCult@sopuli.xyz 8 points 2 days ago

found this, article seems to be from 2017

[–] massive_bereavement@fedia.io 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I wonder how cursed is now that pen

[–] gnutrino@programming.dev 6 points 2 days ago

The pen's probably fine, subcritical plutonium isn't that radioactive and while they were certainly tempting fate with that setup they didn't actually cause criticality as it happens.

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Radiation exposure doesn't cause radioactivity

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's gotta be some sort of safety rule violation, right?

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

They hadn't realised yet one could be that dumb

[–] matelt@feddit.uk 4 points 2 days ago

Bloody hell have they formed a Louis Slotin cult or what

[–] My_IFAKs___gone@lemmy.world -5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not a sphere, not imploding, not critical. Pu don't werq lyk dat.
