Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

Par for the course of my recent comment regarding theprimeagen.

If you've ever watched his live streams, he lets the mask slip from time to time. The point when I realized he was a crypto-fash was when he said "my favourite conspiracy theory is the one that Michelle Obama is a man." There are other tells and dog whistles if you pay attention.

It should have been obvious earlier to be honest. His on screen personality is like he modelled himself on a slightly less theatrical version of the Dr. Disrespect character and then applied it to programming.

“my favourite conspiracy theory is the one that Michelle Obama is a man.”

That isn't even a good conspiracy. (that is also why it is a dogwhistle, if you enjoyed those kinds of crazy conspiracies you would say 'transvestigations where everybody famous is actually trans' is my fave (and yes they do it to everybody, it is very dumb). Focussing only on Michelle is odd, and shows in the kind of environments you hang out with (My example would be Andrew Tate, but it also isn't funny, as it is part of the wider 'make trans people unsafe' campaign, and people should understand that))).

can i just say that I appreciate your lisp-inspired comment structure?

I have meds for that, but every now and then I don't correct myself and go with the flow, my mind goes on tangents. I'm fun at parties.

Totally. I've never even heard that comment on Michelle Obama but it tracks with all the other things I've seen slip by. I couldn't point to a single moment that convinced me, but one of the earliest warning signs I saw was him defending another dev streamer who's decidedly more lib-coded (theo-of-the-t3-stack/ping.gg/the-t3-llm-chat-app) to his community by stating "he helped me out when some people were trying to accuse me of being alt-right, which I mean come on <smirk>". This being when he still had skinny anime girls as his pc desktop on-stream and would make "blue hair + pronouns" jokes about rust while simultaneously advocating to use the language.

It should have been obvious earlier to be honest.

But we're supposed to be the unprejudiced ones, not the crypto-fash (I'm only being half sarcastic). It's tiring how they exploit benefit-of-doubt, and it's so hard for me to tell the difference between someone who's well positioned to fall down the pipeline and someone who's actively part of said pipeline.

So much fuss over someone's dotfiles and progressive web apps

[–] rook@awful.systems 23 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Mmm. There’s certainly nothing else about any of the people or projects involved that’s likely to be a source of fuss, either.

No sir, nothing but apolitical dramaless software development as far as the eye can see.

Looks like I'm out of the loop. Care to elaborate?

There are various other posts here on the general subject.

Omarchy is a deeply uninteresting and partially-assed project that has been thrust into the limelight because if the creator’s political leanings, not because of any merits it might have.

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 4 points 2 weeks ago

yeah it’s pretty amazing

in one respect it’s at best one-percent-assed (for both meanings of). in another, it’s all ass

takes special kind of fuckery to create garbage that fractally terrible

[–] Architeuthis@awful.systems 19 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

My impression from reading the stuff posted here is that omarchy is a nothing project that's being aggressively astroturfed so a series of increasingly fashy contributors can gain clout and influence in the foss ecosystem.

DHH has always had a cult of personality, since the very early days of Rails (I started hearing about his boring ass in 2005. Ugh!).

He attracts people who are into hype. Around 2013 junior developers loved to say “did you hear what DHH said?” And I’d have to explain to them that I didn’t care because he seemed like a douche and rarely said anything someone smarter than him hadn’t already said many times.

He is wealthy and has a soapbox, so he is a dumb person’s idea of a smart person.

Since the start!

Tested it yesterday. Don't really like it. Don't get me wrong it looks nice and seems to be kinda polished, but its way to much work to remove all the stupid shit I don't need. DHH says its for professionals. Arch and Rolling release distro don't fit with working professionally in my opinion.

I'm happy if it gets more poeple to try linux but it's not for me. Debian all the way and despite what DHH said, you can install hyprland on debian (and even ubuntu) no problem. He seems to be kinda a linux noob :)

[–] froztbyte@awful.systems 8 points 2 weeks ago

you type “DHH said” twice in one post like he’s anyone to listen to, amazing

(pro-tip: he ain’t)

[–] bitofhope@awful.systems 5 points 2 weeks ago

I've used rolling distros professionally on my one-man workstation and they've been fine. I wouldn't want it on a server without a regular update schedule, rigorously followed.

"Polished" is not what I'd call the bits of Omarchy I've come across.

[–] Reach_the_man@awful.systems 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

been using Arch(EOS) as (mostly casual) daily driver (honestly feels smoother than ubuntu), what should i look out for?

[–] bitofhope@awful.systems 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nothing. You should only look out for things when you notice a need that is not fulfilled by what you're currently running.

[–] Jayjader@jlai.lu 12 points 2 weeks ago

a screen shot of a youtube recommendation of the same video as the top post. this time, the video title reads "TheStandup - DHH talks omarchy". The Standup is the name of a podcast hosted by the primeagen.

Title changed, lol. Damage control for the damage control?

[–] RoyaltyInTraining@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I never understood what this damn distro is about. All I hear is "IT GOT DEFAULTS!" whenever I try to look it up. I always prefer to stick with upstream distros unless a downstream project makes a significant change.

That's cause that's all it is lol, it's just arch bundled with some guys dotfiles

[–] BlueMonday1984@awful.systems 17 points 2 weeks ago

I never understood what this damn distro is about.

Omarchy's not a distro, its an open endorsement of fascism. Its getting pushed as hard as it is in an attempt to entrench fascists in Linux and the FOSS ecosystem at large.
