Probably depends on where you are in the world and type of supermarket. Here you'll get most stuff wrapped in plastic that doesn't need it like bananas, apples, and root veg.

Yeah convenience mostly I suspect. You get 1kg of potatoes or whatever in a plastic bag so you don't have to weigh them out in the shop or then faff about at the self service when checking out.

They're starting to get better by introducing paper wrapping for a bunch of bananas in some supermarkets but there's still a long way to go back to just having bins of loose produce.

Tbh I prefer that big plastic bag to the Styrofoam trays, because Styrofoam is the fucking worst
