They were tromping around in the Carolina woods during hunting season... So they aren't sending their brightest.
In September, Landry requested to activate the state’s National Guard to address “ongoing public safety concerns.” Last week, speaking about Swamp Sweep, the governor told NewsMax: "I don't know what all the fuss is about, because we work with our federal agencies all the time to take dangerous criminals off the street."
There were national guard posted up in Jackson Square yesterday, and it was so fucking weird and uncomfortable.
It's never been infrequent to see a few National Guardsmen (like 1 or 2) posted around the city after a bad Hurricane. There are plenty of stories post Katrina of guardsmen from all over the country, on little power trips and acting like fascist shit heads when they were stationed more long term. Usually though when you have 1 or 2 stationed around the city at different spots for a few days after a hurricane, they obviously stick out, but they also very much seem to be enjoying their time in New Orleans.
It's a fun city to just sit and people watch. Obviously drunk people tend to just stop and chit chat. Basically they're treated like a part of the city bc they're there to do a temporary job as a result of an uncontrollable force of nature.
That was not the case yesterday. I didn't stop to do an official head count, but I would guess there were around 3 dozen armed guardsmen just standing isolated in one corner of Jackson square, and people were avoiding it like the plague. They stayed huddled in their little isolated corner of the square. Nobody interacted with them, or really even acknowledged them, but it just felt like the armed elephant in the room that we collectively agreed to pretend isn't there.
It seems pretty obvious, why anyone who cares about self preservation would avoid an area occupied by an armed militia. You don't know what the fuck they're actually there for or what they might do. Are they there to just intimidate and remind people that their city is being occupied? Are they place holders for border patrol? Both? Who knows.
Are they opening the levees?
are those agents being dosed with diuretics??
New years on bourbon st is gonna be amazing.
