“Windows 95 chime composter” is a fucking wild way to refer to Brian Eno.

[–] CombatWombat1212@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Yeah Brian Eno has done other things lmfao

[–] Pnut@lemm.ee 3 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

My first reaction was "Brian Eno did the chime?!". Weirdly. Yesterday I learned that Trent Reznor was the sound designer for the original DOOM games. When you think about it, it makes sense. These people are experts. It's just weird to see rockstars branching out in anything other than gin/vodka brands we don't really care about.

Trent Reznor did Quake’s music.

[–] SnotFlickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 21 hours ago

Rob Zombie did Quake II

This is such an absurd way to describe one of the most influential music theorists of the modern age.

I get that the headline wanted to tie him to Microsoft but this is like introducing Tony Hawk as a guy who started a successful clothing company.

Edit: glad to see I'm in good company here.

This is how he should always be introduced.

Electronic music legend Brian Eno. You might remember him as the composer of the Windows 95 chime.

Reminds me of this meme about modern title inflation:

[–] sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

AOL digital prophet lol that's amazing

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think this is originally from the 00s (notice in the undertitle the news about Pres. Obama)

It was already a silly job title back then and time was not kind to it...

But this gets more clicks!

Bu-rah, Brrrrrrring... pling pling, pling pling, pling, pling....

[–] Nyadia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 42 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I know it's relevant cause it's about Microsoft but it's still funny to see a headline refer to him as just "Windows 95 chime composer Brian Eno"

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago

It's both hilarious and insulting. I love it.

He's a culturally significant musician who has released numerous albums and worked with a wide variety of artists, probably most notably David Byrne of Talking Heads.

For example David Bowie's "I'm Afraid of Americans" that he worked on with Trent Reznor originally started as a collaboration between Bowie and Eno. Reznor cleaned it up and made it radio friendly whereas Eno's cut was highly experimental as he is wont to do.

Boring. Windows chime was his peak imo

[–] mx_smith@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Some of the best ambient music of our time.

[–] PillowTalk420@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Which to be clear is an album

Roxy Music as well as creating a ton of soundtracks and being on the cutting edge of music tech for decades. He’s an incredibly interesting and influential artist.

“Ambient 1: Music for Airports” basically invented the genre of specifically-designed ambient music. Before that, it was all background noise and Muzak.

[–] PostiveNoise@kbin.melroy.org 7 points 1 day ago

Denouncing Microsoft.

Oh, and coining the term Ambient Music, and being an electronic music pioneer. ...Nothing as historic as composing a chime sound for windows, once, however.

[–] OmegaLemmy@discuss.online 7 points 1 day ago

Brian Eno... Thank you Brian Eno. I love you. Can I hug you?

[–] countrypunk@slrpnk.net 17 points 1 day ago

Brian Eno has always been based and continues to be. He signed a letter calling for an Israeli boycott because of the apartheid in 2006. Plus he makes great music.

[–] PillowTalk420@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait... Brian Eno made the sounds for Windows 95? Holy shit.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He made the boot up sound.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Also, he composed the sound of a 14.4BAUD modem along with minimalist artist Phillip Glass.

[–] apfelwoiSchoppen@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I laughed out loud at that one.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago

I can't tell how many people are eating the proverbial onion, but I'm enjoying it, too.

[–] SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I've listened to Glass's organ pieces and their repetitiveness always reminds me of mechanical machines. Watching cogs spin and the like.

Wow Really? I enjoy Phillip Glass but I had no idea. What can I search for to learn more? "14.4baud phillip glass" is giving me nothing 😔

[–] distantsounds@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Windows Vista chime composer Robert Fripp has yet to comment.

[–] orbituary@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yet another Bowie contributer (as @Snot Flickerman@lemmy.blahaj.zone pointed out about Eno) - Heroes comes to mind first.

[–] rabber@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

Wow I had no idea Brian Eno composed that. Insane. It makes so much sense
