If you must use it, put it in your android work profile using island or similar, and run the apk through revanced first. Christ it's bad for you in every way though. Please don't use it.

Or better yet, use tiktok in your web browser. It has far fewer permissions and access to your system because of the browser sandbox and how the web is built.

That's why companies constantly push users to download the app while using the web app, because they can track users more effectively (Android's sandbox is shit and allows apps to fingerprint users very easily).

Tik tok makes it nearly impossible to use their website on mobile browser. When friends send me memes on there I usually have to switch to desktop mode and even then it's really difficult to navigate. Annoying enough that half the time I don't even bother to look if I get a tiktok link.

[–] regdog@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

Or better yet, do not use TikTok at all.

[–] GlenRambo@jlai.lu 6 points 1 week ago

Better yet. https://github.com/MarsHeer/offtiktok

I think it only works for following specific people though. Maybe need to self host for the whole thing it to work.

I don't have to, fortunately. Just decided to check if it's as bad as I thought it was (it's way worse)

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is there any instance where using TikTok would be mandatory? I would hate that line of work, my gosh.

[–] bishoponarope@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Social media/PR work I imagine, I used to work in media pre-tiktok and having a public account on every social media was mandatory. Can't recommend jobs like that if I'm honest.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I can imagine, I would not want that job if I could choose. Luckily for me, I can.

There's an app in your tracker

[–] BattleGrown@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Duck Duck Go browser can set up a local VPN on your phone (doesn't connect anywhere) that blocks the telemetry and tracking attempts before they go out.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I just got massively ratio'd by suggesting duck duck go here a week or two ago.

Do you know why people hate it? It's my go to in all honesty.

[–] far_university1990@reddthat.com 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They push ai and only proxy bing result.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can you link me any source?

I'm not saying you're wrong, just want to learn about it myself.

[–] far_university1990@reddthat.com 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

To see ai just search in ddg.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckDuckGo

In July 2016, DuckDuckGo officially announced the extension of its partnership with Yahoo! that brought new features to all users of the search engine, including date filtering of results and additional site links. It also partners with Bing, Yandex, and Wikipedia to produce results or make use of features offered.

Bing biggest of three partner. Read also a while ago bing result very similar to ddg result.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ohhh.

Thanks for letting me know homie!

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Also the Browser is just Chrome rebrand. Get IronFox and set DDG as your search engine if you really want it.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thanks for the info homie!

Can I ask if you're a bigger fan of brave? I just read they use compute cycles to mine crypto.

Is that true?

Brave is also a Chrome rebrand and has some sketchy history already.

You can use DDG completely without AI. People are upset once again over nothing with that one imo

The default is ai on. Ai shouldopt in. Same as privacy violation.

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Me too. I break out to google with a !g when necessary, which is maybe 1/3 of the time depending on the subject (maps, technical)

[–] Candice_the_elephant@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I keep chrome installed purely for Google apps. Edge for MS apps (mainly for work). Brave for porn with a VPN only so I can save cookies with my preferences, and lastly Firefox focus for browsing and default open as it clears everything on close automatically.

I don't install social media apps unless they are 3rd party and don't have tracking and ads, lemmy has some great apps.

Gotta keep them separated now.

I knew it was brave to admit that on here lol

I'll find an alternate browser for my occasional fap sessions to keep you happy :)

Tracker control does similar per app. And you can allow certain categories or domains through to the the minimal needed for the app to function.

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Wait are we talking about the trackers or the fact that they renamed the pedo-infested app Musically to TikTok because of its infamy?

[–] lepinkainen@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Good thing that Instagram has only moms removed out their daughters, that’s a lot better 😀

They're both so far beyond redemption

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I don't use that either because fuck corporate social media, but IG isn't straight up marketed towards little kids at least.

In other news: 1 + 1 = 2.

This statement is inappropriate and offensive toward the glorious CCP

The CCP is inappropriate and offensive toward humanity.

[–] ReginaPhalange@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (3 children)

How does these kind off trackers scanners work - if the thing that they are given as input is an apk?
Surely these APKs don't want to broadcast publicly all their tracking partners, and would just bury tracking requests deep inside the code.

Are tracking scanners really sophisticated disassemblers?

[–] HyperfocusSurfer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

App manager in particular uses a list of known tracking activities/services/etc, as far as I understand: https://muntashir.dev/AppManager/en/#subsec:faq:how-trackers-libs-updated

[–] Candice_the_elephant@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

If the service decides to encrypt the tracking data and send it to their own servers with their normal content before sending it on to the tracking servers, there's no way to isolate it other than prevent it being collected in the first place. I believe Meta already does this to hide the vast amount of data they steal from your device with all their apps. It's how they can hide the data they scrape via hacks that bypass regular sandboxing and permission restrictions.

[–] Zwiebel@feddit.org 5 points 1 week ago

I have no idea but they list which trackers are used specifically like firebase, analytics etc

[–] JSens1998@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They look for imported tracking SDKs, URLs, template code blocks, etc.

That was the big controversy about TikTok right from the beginning.
