Plasma 6 Bugs

If you encounter a bug, proceed to https://bugs.kde.org/, check whether it has been reported.

If it hasn't, report it yourself.

PLEASE THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE POSTING HERE.

Can't wait to try this on the Steam Frame

[–] Yggnar@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Pretty sure steam frames cameras will be black and white

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 7 points 2 months ago

I'm more interested in the virtual screens than the AR aspect. I'm perfectly fine to do this in a VR office I really don't need to see the real world when doing this.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 2 points 2 months ago

It has a connector on the front for a potential color camera

[–] shadshack@feddit.online 1 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Why do you say that? Valve's last two VR headsets had full color cameras.

[–] Thunderbird4@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago

It’s in the published specs. The pass through cameras on the Steam Frame will be monochrome, but an expansion port exists that could support third party color cameras. They’ve said they prioritized game streaming features over AR.

"Four high-resolution, monochrome cameras" https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamframe

[–] PureTryOut@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My Valve Index only has black and white cameras. And what other headset are you talking about? They never made more.

[–] forestbeasts@pawb.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

Our HTC Vive (yeah, it's not made by Valve, but it's the Original SteamVR Headset and is kinda close enough) has a color passthrough camera. It's really low res and useless for fancy AR but it's great if you need to look around for a sec.

Or some AR glasses!

Some are super cheap but all use (non-standard-rgb subpixel?) oleds.

Might be more comfortable for such 2d stuff.

You heathens and your godamn communist technology

[–] Fabrik872@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What headset is used in the video?

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

I don't know, but the developer mentions these in the Merge Request: Rokid Max, HP G2, Quest 3.

I've never heard of Rokid. Looks like they are $150 AR glasses.

[–] PureTryOut@lemmy.world 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Huh, is this something that's actively been developed? Is there a MR?

[–] BoastfulDaedra@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I understand the Steam Frame is using it

[–] PureTryOut@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Source? I found the MR, https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/8671, and nothing about that shows it's for the Steam Frame. In fact, the video shows a colored passthrough camera mode while the Steam Frame (sadly) has a black and white camera only.

[–] BoastfulDaedra@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Valve has announced the use of the KDE desktop on the frame, and then KDE shows this off. Couldn't give you more than that, but it seems pretty straightforward doesn't it?

[–] PureTryOut@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You say that but so far nothing points to it being developed for that device. It seems to mostly be a personal project by the developer, especially because this is the first time a bunch of KDE developers seem to see the code. The author of the MR even updated the MR to mention they do not work for Valve. That doesn't mean it isn't useful for that device of course, it very much makes sense to run on there. But again, the black and white cameras of that device makes this mode less interesting.

One video showing something better than the entire concept of the metaverse. Probably because this doesn't look like a way to create a space specifically to rent, sell or advertise shit.

[–] Jestzer@lemmy.world 10 points 2 months ago

I would be thrilled if I could bring life back to my Oculus Rift S with this.

[–] unknownuserunknownlocation@kbin.earth 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Getting a 403. Is it just me?

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Same. I was able to find a video of it online though. This is probably what they posted. https://invent.kde.org/plasma/kwin/-/merge_requests/8671

[–] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

Correct, that's the video that I see in the OP.

OK, that's also returning a 403. Wondering if there's something with my IP address...

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 7 points 2 months ago

Nice!

Next step is to make it not only a set of virtual flat screens, but allow the user to interact with 3D objects

Imagine having that tree in 3D and having screens around it, or something along these lines

[–] BoastfulDaedra@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 2 months ago

NOOOIIIICCE!!!

I mean, I'll never, ever, use it, but.... NIICE!!

[–] lascapi@jlai.lu 4 points 2 months ago

Wow! I love it !! 🤩

[–] fubarx@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Cries in word-processor 'focused writing' mode.

Still, pretty amazing they got full running video in one of the windows.

[–] slothrop@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

That's great, but how do I pron with this?!?!?

[–] jlow@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 months ago

Completely forgot about Gnosia, need to pickit up again.

[–] hodgepodgin@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

way too much content for me :(

[–] NightFantom@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 months ago

So can we use this in non-vr? I just want bumptop back ...

[–] Shayeta@feddit.org 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Can we first get a functional headless KRDP though? TigerVNC + Xorg + KDE worked amazing for connecting to my headless work computer on the same LAN, but ever since switching to wayland this kind of setup is simply impossible since it needs to be implemented on Kwin level.

Is anyone working on this? Is there a feature branch I can keep track of and maybe contribute to?

[–] FooBarrington@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

It's very unlikely that work on this VR feature prevents work on headless KRDP, so let's not artificially delay features, OK?
