Despite everything, Márquez Duany doesn’t blame Trump. “There are probably too many people here,” he says. “I understand trying to get rid of those who shouldn’t be here. But Trump should look at each individual case.

“Like mine.”

For many Cuban Americans, the change in U.S./Cuban immigration policy is “a real surprise,” says Ana Sofía Peláez, executive director of the Miami Freedom Project, a Latino civic and education organization that deals with immigration, among other issues. “There’s real disbelief that Cubans can be targeted.”

Noooo you're supposed to deport all those other Latinos! We're different! I mean, you can't tell just by looking at us, but I'm sure you have a very nuanced understanding of our diverse views and experiences clueless

the sad thing is, this gusano is going to end up treated really well. probably on some kind of simple house arrest somewhere decent while the government figures out what to do with him... which will inevitably be some kind of chill community service that will be in whatever neighborhood he ends up getting a place in.

at most, some citizens might be rude to him for being pro-trump and then when the US grants some exception allowing his return, the cubans will encourage him to go back to the US where he will act like he was imprisoned and abused only to daringly escape back to the freedom loving US and ride the media circuit.

Cuba is a civilised country, unlike the Burger Reich

Never even heard of this guy until now. I’d love to know what protests he apparently inspired

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 39 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

I think it was the ones where western media had to pass off images of the massive pro-independence counter-protests as if they were photos of the CIA protests because the CIA protests were small and sucked?

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 18 points 3 weeks ago

Ah, the time they shared that picture of the president of Cuba at the counter protest and said it was from the protest because I guess they were just hoping nobody would know who the guy was

so exactly how big was this protest he inspired?

[–] BeanBoy@hexbear.net 38 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Prob smaller than the pro-government counterprotest that showed up

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 26 points 3 weeks ago

my lazy assumption is that it's the one from a few years ago where the media here used mislabeled pictures of pro-revolution crowds instead of the gusanos.
