I think Rutte thinks this. But appeasing an autocrat will only make things worse. Plus what he's doing is pretty insulting to the NATO members that quite rightly have refused to join this war.

For most people not voting is a choice. It's accepting whoever wins.
I get your point, there are many elections where people vote for the lesser evil. But voting for Trump two times, in my view, wasn't voting for the lesser evil.
Aren't these the same? The rulers are elected by the people.

I’m not saying dump all US bonds. I’m saying send a signal. It’s been done before, with some success (https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/11/business/bond-market-trump-treasury-yield-rates). I agree it’s not a perfect solution to the problem, but showing strength is the only thing a bully understands.
