To clarify, this isn't about selfhosting or wanting a free service. I already pay for an email provider and I have no intention of hosting one myself. This is only about principles.

Tuta and Proton, which are both commonly recommended, have not released their back-end code (read about it here and here). Proton doesn't seem interested in open sourcing their code, and Tuta has claimed they're aiming to do it in the future (the claim was made years ago and nothing has happened yet). They also both claim to be open source in their marketing.

Is there any alternative that is fully FOSS?

Path of Exile 2 might be relevant here, the Souls games were what first came to mind when they introduced dodge roll, and the eldritch horror aesthetic is certainly there (albeit to a lesser extent compared to Path of Exile 1). It's online though.

Word exclusions, video sorting, relevant searches... Everything has turned to shit on that website.

Does anyone know if the NixOS packages are safer from these types of attacks? As far as I know many packages are missing maintainers.

I really like the declarative paradigm of NixOS, but the way I use my computer often actively go against this paradigm. Next I found out about atomic distributions such as Fedora Kinoite and Aurora, and I really liked those too except for the fact that I had to layer so many packages which sort of defeated the purpose of using their images (not everything can or should be run in distrobox containers). This past day I've been setting up a custom image using the ublue-os image template and I'm surprised by how easy it was to get going. The only negative part is having to use GitHub, which I would prefer to avoid.

I just wanted to make this post to highlight how easy it is to customize atomic distributions (assuming you want to use atomic distributions in the first place, traditional distributions are of course easier to customize). If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

I can't get rid of it, it's obnoxious. I've tried filtering the element with my adblocker but it keeps reappearing. As much as I find Reddit useful (unfortunately), especially for information and discussion relating to my country, I will never install their proprietary garbage app on my phone just to use their website.

Oh well. I've used the Internet before Reddit existed, I'm sure I can get used to doing so again.
