A supermarket has a cashback option with a limit of €200. The cashier entered a cashback transaction for €100. I tapped the terminal using a non-SEPA card. Instant decline. We tried again, this time using the EMV chip. The cashier said enter your PIN. The terminal displayed the amount and said “press OK” (did not ask for PIN). Pressing digits had no effect. It was apparently only asking for confirmation not authentication. I pressed OK and got an instant decline with no reason given. Tried again, this time entering my whole pin even though the buttons had no effect, then pressed OK. Again declined.

It is bizarre that PIN was not requested. I think the cashier rightfully expected PIN entry because it was a 3-figure amount.

I went to an entirely different shop and asked for much less cashback. Same thing. Terminal just asked me to press OK then gave an instant decline. Then at that same shop I made a normal purchase without cashback, and it succeeded.

I asked the bank why I was declined. The bank said there are no problems with the account and that their records show that every transaction was approved. The bank insisted that there is no trace of any failed transaction.

So, WTF is happening? Is the PoS terminal deciding to refuse the transaction without even contacting the bank? And if so, why would it make the offer in the 1st place (to press OK)?

Europe's most famous technology law, the GDPR, is next on the hit list as the European Union pushes ahead with its regulatory killing spree to slash laws it reckons are weighing down its businesses.

The European Commission plans to present a proposal to cut back the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR for short, in the next couple of weeks. Slashing regulation is a key focus for Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as part of an attempt to make businesses in Europe more competitive with rivals in the United States, China and elsewhere.

If you send an email to a recipient whose email account is hosted by Microsoft, or you share you email address with such entities, you are part of the problem.

I refuse to be part of the problem. So before contacting a recipient (gov agencies in particular), I do an MX lookup on their email address. It almost always points to MS servers.

So snail mail it is. Otherwise sending them email serves as a signal to the recipient that MS is okay for email.

Ein Grundschüler in Sachsen findet die AfD doof und zeigte das auch mit einem „Fck AfD“ Gekritzel in einem privaten Heft. Jetzt ist er einer Hetzjagd ausgesetzt, weil er ein durchgestrichenes Hakenkreuz in sein Kritzelheft gezeichnet hat.

Warum wird ein Schüler in die Zange genommen, der sich klar gegen die AfD positioniert? Wirkt die Stimmungsmache der rechtsextremen Partei? Die AfD hat Meldeportale initiiert, nennt sie teilweise „Informationsportal ,Neutrale Schule‘“ – und stiftet so Schüler:innen an, kritische Lehrkräfte zu denunzieren. Will man an einer sächsischen Grundschule der AfD keine Angriffsfläche bieten?

In Chemnitz bekommt der Fall eine zusätzliche Dimension durch einen anderen Vorgang nur kurz zuvor: Demnach soll ein anderer Schüler an der Grundschule Hakenkreuze im Schulgebäude geschmiert haben, und zwar solche, die nicht durchgestrichen waren. Ahmets Mutter schreibt: „Bisher ist mir nicht bekannt, dass dieser Schüler mit der gleichen Härte wie (…) bestraft wurde, meines Wissens nach wird dieser Schüler ja auch nicht strafversetzt.“

Aber selbst wenn Schule und Landesschulamt noch einlenken: An seine bisherige Grundschule zurück kann Ahmet wohl kaum. Neuer Anlauf, wenn im Sommer die Versetzung in die fünfte Klasse ansteht. Die Mutter Karin Yılmaz ist noch immer völlig fassungslos, wie sich die Dinge so hochschaukeln konnten: „Es fühlt sich an wie in einem falschen Film. Ich kann gar nicht glauben, dass so etwas wirklich stattfindet.“
