Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror

H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos is a shared universe far larger and more terrifying than that of humanity, where ancient, malevolent beings known as the Great Old Ones slumber in the depths of space or time. After Lovecraft's death, the Mythos has been expanded and developed by many authors, including August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard. These and many other authors have helped to flesh out the Mythos into a rich and complex Dark Universe.

The origin and "core" of the Mythos start of course with the collection 23 of Lovecraft’s greatest weird tales. In these stories, monstrous entities traverse the gulfs of time and space and humankind cowers in fright at the havoc they wreak.

Beyond the Wall of Sleep is more than a tribute to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Although it’s meant to be a sequel to another tale, Chad Ferrin massaged what he got into a quirky fun tale about the (coming) end of days.

Chad Ferring Filmmaker

From a simple film thrown together last minute to becoming a trilogy to honor the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Chad Ferrin doesn’t need that long of a re-introduction. When I spoke to him about his first work, The Deep Ones, (interview link) the ideas for a modern age retelling of several tales have its charm. And he wasted no time in working on a direct sequel for the first.

But for the third, it’s a completely different beast, and I had to chat with him again about how that came to be: (...)

Lovecraftian games have been blowing up over the past few years. Dredge already has three DLCs, Darkest Dungeon did so well we got a sequel, and Still Wakes the Deep is sitting at almost 90% positive reviews on Steam. And the list keeps growing – smaller titles like Worshippers of Cthulhu and Do No Harm have also been getting plenty of love from players. This trend isn’t slowing down anytime soon, so we can expect even more in this year.

With that in mind, here are my top five upcoming 2025 Cthulhu-inspired games that I can’t wait to play!

Much like Big Bad Wolf Studio, ACE Team is taking their turn on Lovecraft with The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, a first-person 4 players co-op psychological horror title. The game is currently in development for launch later this year for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and the Xbox Series.

Inspired by Lovecraft’s eponymous novella, “The Mound“, Omen of Cthulhu casts players as a squad of conquistadors on an expedition to discover a legendary underground city rumored to hold priceless treasures. However, deep within an eerie and oppressive jungle, players must explore and survive monstrous, otherworldly entities that distort their senses and threaten their sanity as well as their lives

Vampire: The Masquerade — Swansong developers Big Bad Wolf Studio are turning to Lovecraft for their new first-person title, Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, the immersive storytelling experience will launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam.

Taking place in the year 2053, an occult threat grows ever more blatant, as strange, incomprehensible events increase in activity. Around the world, as land resources become more scarce, corporations instead turn to the uncharted depths of the oceans. However, they do so unaware of the ancient horror that lies beneath.

You are Noah, an agent of Ancile, which is a secret Interpol division specializing in occult cases. You’ve been tasked with investigating the mysterious disappearance of miners in the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Aided by your AI companion, Key, you must explore the vast, labyrinthine prison of R’lyeh—an ancient, sunken city of cyclopean proportions—and resist the creeping madness caused by Cthulhu’s influence. At its core lies a secret that could shatter your understanding of reality.

Looking to build off of the buzz from the initial reveal back in November, Vertpaint Games has dropped a part documentary, part gameplay teaser for their upcoming Lovecraftian folk horror title Ritual Tides. The teaser gives viewers plenty of eye candy, looking to prove the claim by Vertpaint CEO James Macleod that Ritual Tides will be “the highest quality horror game of 2025.”

In this documentary-esque reveal, viewers are candidly treated to a never-before-seen peek behind the development of Ritual Tides, offering glimpses of the eerily stunning landscapes and its grotesque inhabitants.

...

Described as being “exceedingly dark” and “not pulling any punches,” Ritual Tides sees players finding themselves washed up on a beach on the aforementioned island, with the only goal being to uncover the island’s horrific secrets. Players will have a “gun” at their disposal, but not in a typical fashion, which will set this title apart from other games within the genre.

...

Currently, the game is slated for a Q3 2025 launch, followed by releases on console. Keep tabs on the game’s development for now via the official website.

Based on H.P. Lovecraft‘s 1919 short story “Beyond the Wall of Sleep,” the cosmic horror film hits VOD on March 4 from Breaking Glass Pictures.

It’s the third Lovecraft adaptation from writer-director Chad Ferrin, following 2020’s The Deep Ones and 2024’s The Old Ones.

Renowned oneirologist Ambrose London is summoned to Arkham Asylum to investigate a bizarre split-personality case involving a patient seemingly possessed by a 122-year-old colonial peasant. What begins as a psychological study soon descends into unimaginable terror when London’s Dream Machine unleashes an alien life form intent on world annihilation. (...)
