Lovecraft Mythos - Cosmic Horror

H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos is a shared universe far larger and more terrifying than that of humanity, where ancient, malevolent beings known as the Great Old Ones slumber in the depths of space or time. After Lovecraft's death, the Mythos has been expanded and developed by many authors, including August Derleth, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard. These and many other authors have helped to flesh out the Mythos into a rich and complex Dark Universe.

The origin and "core" of the Mythos start of course with the collection 23 of Lovecraft’s greatest weird tales. In these stories, monstrous entities traverse the gulfs of time and space and humankind cowers in fright at the havoc they wreak.

Boom! Studios has announced that it is set to publish an English-language adaptation of the hit French graphic novel The Last Day of H.P. Lovecraft as a four-issue limited series.

Written by Romauld Guilivo with art by Jakub Rebelka, it tells the “dreamlike story of the very last day of horror pioneer and controversial writer H.P. Lovecraft [and] the final journey of a complex and tortured man facing his choices, his writings, and his wrongs at the very last moment of his life.”

You can check out an early unlettered sneak peek at The Last Day of H.P.

The Fallout franchise has long maintained a Lovecraftian subplot, which I often call "The Dunwich Mystery". Last week, Fallout 76 expanded upon these Eldritch themes with the "Gone Fission" update, which primairly emphasized a new fishing mechanic, but also introduced new characters and locations related to Fallout's Dunwich Mystery.

(...) The concepts for a film adaptation of At The Mountains of Madness have been in Guillermo del Toro's head for decades, with the acclaimed visual artist admitting to having an obsession with the story as far back as his childhood. A script was first penned by del Toro alongside frequent collaborator Matthew Robbins, who also aided the director with the writing of Pinnochio and Crimson Peak, as early as 2003. The screenplay was pitched by the pair to Warner Brothers multiple times, but the entertainment repeatedly turned it down, caught up on del Toro's insistence on an R-rating. (...)

A new take on H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West: Reanimator is officially in the works, and it’s coming from the minds behind The Haunting in Connecticut. Screenwriters Adam Simon and Tim Metcalfe are teaming up once again to adapt the classic horror story into a contemporary feature film.

I love it when the Internet culture collides with Stuff and it ends up being bloody horrifying.

Hey all, I recently finished a side project that grew out of my fascination with Lovecraft's way of using broken up sentences to signal cognitive/mental disintegration. Many of Lovecraft's stories start with intact grammar, and indeed the grammar is intact through most of it.... and then, at the end, it often breaks down. So language is something fragile and easily broken.

I think the effect is increased by Lovecraft's long, winding, meticulously constructed sentences in the tradition of the nineteenth century and the contrast in comparison with the "modernist" fragmentary exclamations ending the stories.

Anyway, I made a game exploring this. The result is the short, minimalistic puzzler called The Stamp.

It’s centered around a childhood symbol game that gets "tainted" by introducing elements from the Pnakotic manuscripts, and involves mirroring sentences using esoteric or mundane symbols. As it's a text-based game, there’s no combat or jump scares, just a slow descent into dissonance and seeking patterns in vain.

I really wanted the some of feel of stories like The Whisperer in Darkness and The Haunter of the Dark, where perception and language begin to slip.

If this sounds interesting, you can find it on Steam: 🔗 https://store.steampowered.com/app/3079840/The_Stamp/

Nothing could be more valuable for me than input from Lovecraft aficionados, so I'd love to hear what fellow fans think. I'll of course be happy to send a free key (in a chat) so you can download the game for free (provided there's some brutally honest feedback in return :)).

Beyond the Wall of Sleep is more than a tribute to the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Although it’s meant to be a sequel to another tale, Chad Ferrin massaged what he got into a quirky fun tale about the (coming) end of days.

Chad Ferring Filmmaker

From a simple film thrown together last minute to becoming a trilogy to honor the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Chad Ferrin doesn’t need that long of a re-introduction. When I spoke to him about his first work, The Deep Ones, (interview link) the ideas for a modern age retelling of several tales have its charm. And he wasted no time in working on a direct sequel for the first.

But for the third, it’s a completely different beast, and I had to chat with him again about how that came to be: (...)
