He could have also died. From a victim or accident disposing a body for example.

No follow up after his death. Just showing him with his inner monologue as his brain fades.

Untold afterstory leaves everything unsolved or exposes him after he dies.

I read the first two books and will tell you the series shifted away from the books drastically.

Best I can recall his brother lives (shows up often) and Lugerta dies early on. Doake's is also tortured and killed by a serial killer.

I just checked and in the books:

Tap for spoilerDexter drives his boat into an approaching hurricane, seemingly intending to die. The Coast Guard later finds debris from his boat and presumes him dead.

The series ends with Dexter revealed to have survived the hurricane. He is shown living in isolation as a lumberjack in Oregon, completely detached from his previous life and relationships.

That's one way to end it.
