From what I've heard, the larvae feeds on one of the worst food ever in terms of calories and nutrition which is why it takes so much time. So basically they're just chilling on their piece of tree root which doesn't really screams "active" to me but maybe I'm wrong

They suck liquid from plant roots, if anyone else is wondering.

I'm curious why they evolved to just suck liquid, rather than eating the roots.

Probably because eating all the roots would kill the tree which is unsustainable long term
