You've guessed wrong. I'm living in a (by US standards) high-density small European city right now. 95% of the time, everything I need is within walking or cycling distance. Public transport works well for the remainder. I'm living in a 1500-square-foot house, as are most of my neighbors. There's grass and trees outside, and a river. Neighbor kids are playing outside.
