According to Breaking Defense, the program was launched after the Army halted internal development of the Extended Range Cannon Artillery system and shifted toward evaluating existing self-propelled howitzers in 2024. The report noted that an official list of competitors has not yet been released.

However, several companies are known to be pursuing the program. These include South Korea’s Hanwha, Germany’s Rheinmetall, U.S.-based Elbit America, and a joint offering from Leonardo DRS and European land systems group KNDS.

Nah, artillery is still a huge part of modern warfare, especially in Ukraine. Perhaps even more so than in the past.

The new hotness is using a drone as an artillery observer and targeting aid. With artillery AND drones, you can have real fun. Now, instead of dropping one grenade, your drone can 'drop' an unlimited number of 155mm artillery shells. Put a laser designator on your drone and use guided shells, and then you could do it with pinpoint accuracy.

Sure, drones themselves are effective weapons. But when combined with artillery, they can be terrifyingly effective.
