Why Germany Won’t Call It Genocide (Hanno Hauenstein | The Third Draft, 2025-05-04)

https://hannohauenstein.substack.com/p/why-germany-wont-call-it-genocide
———

German ver. -> https://jacobin.de/artikel/gaza-voelkermord-deutschland-hanno-hauenstein
“Gaza lies in ruins – its people killed, starved, displaced. Yet #Germany refuses to engage with the charge of genocide against Israel. An essay on why this silence will have lasting political effects”

“While Israel’s image in the West is shifting – especially among younger generations – international law increasingly appears to be an empty incantation: a principle … stripped of enforcement mechanisms and universal credibility.

“Germany plays a central role in this context – not only through its continued diplomatic and rhetorical defense of Israel, also by supplying military equipment. At the same time, criticism of or solidarity with Israel is turned into a litmus test for domestic migration and asylum policies, transforming Germany’s foreign policy into a proxy for internal ideological battles.”

Very good read. It’s very frustrating to see how German people seem to be as blind to genocide now as they were back then in the 40s.
