It all comes back the the Avro Arrow, and the dismantling of the Canadian aviation manufacturing industry that followed.
Let us never forget that it was the Conservatives that shut down our own military development and sold our defence contracts to the US.
The party doesn't matter. Historically the Canadian conservatives have been the anti-US party.
It was the US forcing us. Ever since we formed they have acted as though they have authority over us. The fear of that is why no one wanted independence.
The most recent example was the World Cup, the US just decided the unprofitable matches would be paid for by Canada and Mexico.
Historically like how far back are we talking? Because for the last half century they've been pretty damned pro-us-business.
You're right that both parties are, so party doesn't really matter, but it seems disingenuous to characterize the conservatives (not a specific party, conservative parties in general) as being especially or uniquely anti-usa in their actions, since the start of the cold war.
The 70s is when it really changed, a reaction to the recession, but even 10-20 years ago we can CANZUK to reunite with the crown and escape US hegemony.
I don't think that canzuk is a great example, since it's not really opposed strongly by the other parties, and also it's a free trade agreement and conservatives will agree to any free trade agreement with anyone; it's not really especially anti-usa or uniquely conservative.
To be fair, Trudeau was adamantly against it because it weakened the US position but he was more right wing than typical Liberals so it doesn't play into historic trends.
Yeah modern parties are only different in their social policy, not in their fiscal policies. It's pretty crazy.
You say that like the Tories were anti US out of some high minded principles. They just had a different empire they were cozying up to before. They were anti US because they were monarchists. They bent the knee to Britain, and when Britain went down they found new boots to kiss. The Tories never believed in Canada.
If you read the 2nd part I posited a very pro Britain sentiment.
The Progressive Conservative party has always been backdoor funded by US interests. The US MIC wanted no competition, so Diefenbaker shut down Avro, as he was told to. He was right to cancel the Arrow, but he didn't need to shut down Avro.
Regan wanted cheaper manufacturing for Detroit, so Mulroney was put in to make NAFTA happen. Since Lil PP is a proven dud, Jirvani is next, architect of that charity scam in Ohio with his buddy JD Vance.
