/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Sorry I can't read your comment. The 20 lens flares he put on screen still have me blinded

Edit: to be clear. I don't think his movies are bad per say. They're just painfully mediocre.

What director is that supposed to represent? JJ flares are horizontal, sometimes have multiple occurrences in a single frame, and often are accompanied by a briefly blown out image in case the viewer doesn't notice the insane distraction.

JJ, when the lens flared.
SeductiveTortoise, his fists clenched.

Why did Jonathan Frakes direct a comment about JJ Abrams?

[–] stsquad@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

The JJ lens flare then made it into DISCO although I think they toned it down a bit for SNW. I checked out of SFA after 3 episodes so I don't know if they continued to be flare happy there.

For better and worse, Discovery took a lot of cues from the Abrams films, being more action focused, with flashier effects and cinematography, for example.

It got toned down as time went on, but there were parts here and there in Discovery where you can tell they were trying to replicate the films.

Yeah, the Disco premiere was very action-oriented, very JJ coded. I was like, ok, they're trying to draw in viewers with a flashy beginning, but hopefully they'll start being a proper Star Trek show soon. Oh, well. Happily, some people liked the show, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

DISCO? SNW? SFA? I guess with concerted effort I can use context clues to figure it out but like, how often are you typing these things?

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We're in a Star Trek community. I think most people are going to understand those without an issue.

Most /= all but thanks for sharing

Not all people speak English. What's your point?

[–] MurderHobo@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Wouldn’t that exact point lend itself to the idea that spelling out obscure acronyms would be beneficial for people passingly curious to the conversation? Or is this some s-tier wagyu elite topic gatekeeping that must separate itself? I don’t think that’s very Federation of you, bud.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Not everything needs to be explained every time it's said. Language would be ridiculous if we had to define every word every time it's used. Its pretty easy to search "Star Trek Disco" for example and learn what it means if you don't understand it.

Yeah it took me a second. And, i don’t like / haven’t seen those.

My engine room is cardboard and red light bulbs.
