You don't have to have 1 dude do the whole job. You can just use an equal amount of people per capita as smaller countries have.

If I’m not mistaken, not every firearm purchased in the US is registered. How do you expect people to find these firearms without traceability?

I don't. I think there isn't enough popular support for a gun ban for success to happen and it would be a pricey boondoggle. Laws that don't have public consensus behind them have a poor track record. Look at prohibition or the war on drugs.

But it would not fail because of the size of the country. That's silly.
