Annisquam, Missisquoi, Winooski...

New England has some awesome rivers with indigenous names.

Amazon

But Rubicon is really goated river name

Rubicon is just an inherently GOATed word in general. It punches you in the mouth on its way out, and you thank it for it.

Big fan of the Dnieper. Always loved how it sounds.

[–] cmhickman358@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Shenandoah is another good one, it has a good old and easy going feel, just like the river does

[–] ThomasMuentzner@hexbear.net 7 points 1 day ago

Ohio is also a banger Name as well as the POTOMAC flowing into CHESAPEAKE BAY. the britsh should have had the curtancy to take some natives with the to name things .. we could have been spared Many Queen Ann Islands, Prince Henry Peak.

If you don't think humans are good at naming rivers I gotta say, you're in de Nile

[–] jack@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cleveland is built on the Cuyahoga, which means "crooked river" because that shit is twisty as hell

An tSionainn is classic, of course, as well as all her daughters, but the Three Sisters: an Bhearú, an Fheoir, and an tSiúr are pretty lovely. An Bhanna is a personal favourite.

Athabasca and Assiniboine are pretty great, as is the Don's Anishnaabe name Wonscotonach.

Wolastoq is pretty excellent, the people who live there are even called the Wolastoqiyik because of how excellent a river it is.

The B kinda harshes me. Does anyone along the way use it? Donau, Duna, all prettier.

And then you have the Po, which is remarkable for how silly it looks and sounds.

[–] ThomasMuentzner@hexbear.net 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Po is like the one exeption , litterally ass in german. and its such a magnificant area he flows through.. its a tragegdy. you expect better from the Italians "Lago Maggiore" / "Adria"

Its tributaries have nice names, too. Dora Riparia, Tanaro...

"river river" is an all-time classic

Where I'm at we have East River, West River, Mill River (because there was a mill on it), they were kind of lazy with the names. Other good names are Short Hill, Long Hill, and most of the town names are just copies of names where the settlers came from.

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

We mostly have [name of city] River. We're not that creative.

[–] prole@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

Umpqua is one of my favorites to say.

[–] spudnik@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

lots of rivers in Brazil have names that come from indigenous languages, so we have some real bangers too: Xingu, Juruá, Parnaíba, Iguaçu, Juruena, Tapajós, Tietê, Piracicaba

[–] ThomasMuentzner@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

THE ORINOCO is also a Banger !

[–] TrustedFeline@hexbear.net 5 points 1 day ago

El Rio Bravo Del Norte has a name that makes it clear you should not fuck with it.

Three's some good rivers near me that have names in the local Algonquin language, but I'd basically be doxing myself.

[–] huf@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago

i like it when they rhyme, like Rhein and Main or Drava and Sava. also, Olt. amazing name.

[–] FedPosterman5000@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’m a big fan of descriptive names like “Noisy Creek”, less of a fan of ones that imply raw gore used to be dump into it like “Slaughterhouse Creek”. Ojibwe names are some of my favorite because they add more variety than another river being called the “Red River” - Miskwaagamiiwi-zaaga'iganiiwi-ziibi. Monongahela River is a good one, and it combined with the Cheat River to displace my family decades ago- but they’re both v pretty. And the Cheat River always makes me think of this lil dude https://web.archive.org/web/20250225180312/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVDXd2upgL4
