I like the Director's cut of The Abyss.
The Abyss is awesome, love that movie. However later I learned about the production of that movie, big oof.
One of the really cool bits was the rat actually breathed liquid. I just assumed they killed a rat when filming, which was rather harsh. The part about our bodies remembering breathing liquid was bullshit tho. In the womb the mother does the breathing, we don't breathe liquid.
The CGI was also very good for the time, helped along by tons of practical effects. The story did lean hard on other well known sci fi stories, but that's alright.
It was directed by James Cameron so of course it was a nightmare to film. His films are almost always big oof. But god damn especially the director’s cut Special Edition is amazing.
I liked Abyss a lot when it came out, but in a recent re-watch it struck me how much everyone was massively overacting, its almost like the actors were all trying to out do each other.

I feel like I'm the only person who didn't care for Gattaca. Starts with an interesting premise, then sort of falls apart. The Abyss is a classic (but it's tough knowing what the cast/crew went through during filming, oof)
I never did finish Gattaca. I found it so boring and mundane.
It really is a slow burn, especially compared to modern movie pacing.
I watched it when it came out and found it gorgeous. Maybe a bit heavy on the message, but the world-building doesn't try to punch above its weight. It really felt like a not-so-far future.
I see a lot of GATTACA in the American healthcare system.

Mundane is kind of the point. It's a dystopian future dictated by gene editing without any extra frills or fantasy. I've seen it referred to as one of the most scientifically accurate sci-fis. The plot itself is very simple, and the events only affect a handful of people, so I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea.
