Ugh I predict another wave of idiots yelling "Freedom Fries"

[–] eldavi@lemmy.ml 20 points 6 days ago (2 children)

but then again, it was fun back then triggering the conservatives by merely calling them french fries. lol

sometimes you got to look at life's silver linings to keep your sanity going. lol

Never thought of it that way!

Can "Iran fries" be a thing?

Or maybe since fries is already taken, we can rename "chili" to "Irani stew"?

The ol Paulie Walnuts chuckle over here

First off, that would be awesome. I stupidly never saved any of my old freedom fries receipts, and I've always regretted that.

Unfortunately for me, our societies relationship with our political system is so radically different from the early 2000s, that I don't think that specific type of cultural short circuit is possible.

Does this mean that Iran haven't mined the straight? Or did the ship just get lucky?

[–] MrSmoothPP@lemmy.zip 17 points 6 days ago

I don't think it's ever been confirmed the strait was mined by Iran. We know China is allowed to pass through without a problem.

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Why would Iran mine the strait?

[–] Tiresia@slrpnk.net 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Mines don't need to be maintained actively, so it would make sense if Iran were about to lose its capacity to sink ships in the strait by other means. As the US said would happen a few weeks ago.

So US media said Iran would or did mine the strait. And sometimes people believe propaganda even if they know better than to trust it.

[–] yogthos@lemmy.ml 12 points 6 days ago

Right, that was the point I was making there. The only scenario where it would make sense for Iran to mine the strait would be if they couldn't control it otherwise, and it's pretty clear they're in firm control right now.

Trump: "Open the Strait yourselves!"

Europe: "k"

Trump: "No, not like that"

[–] supersquirrel@sopuli.xyz 46 points 1 week ago

Exactly, the Hormuz Strait is already open... to people who aren't beligerants like the US.

Good, all of Europe needs to tell Trump and the US to fuck off.

No one can wrap (late but somehow still early) opportunism in a rousing speech like macron

[–] mrdown@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

See how easy it is?
