I heard about some controversy between the M17 and MMDVM developers. I'm guessing that's why? What's the issue?

You can read up about the removal of M17 from MMDVM here. Boils down to Jonathan disagreeing with how the M17 maintainers operate their project. His impression is that they act not very much in the open source spirit.

Do you think his opinion of them is warranted? What does the community in general think of the project.

I don't really have an opinion on that topic in general. M17 has been on my radar but I never bought a radio to actually start using it. Based on what Jonathan wrote I'd agree with his decision but that is only one perspective in that matter.

@early_riser You can read the story from a neutral angle on #ZeroRetries 0211 https://www.zeroretries.org/i/168106387/mmdvm-versus-m

There is a #mmdvm fork that still includes #M17
