I shit you not, just last year on reddit-logo I got into a long argument about just this with another user. They literally said to just pick a place you want to work, walk in, firm hand shake and look the owner in the eyes.

In Venezuela we call that “palanca”.

that still happens here regularly. we call it having a "party" (it comes from the political party where in the past you had to have a contact in order to join a party). nepotism still reigns supreme though (which itself is another form of party)
