... and it kinda sucks? Dgmw there are things I liked about it (Ellen Burstyn and Jennifer Connelly give great performances) , but between the gimmicky edits and the palpable lack of insight into drug use/abuse/addiction, it just comes across as a less entertaining Reefer Madness. Imho.

Oooooh I've been shitting on this for years and finally found people who thought the same lmao πŸ₯°

I think I would have liked it more if it wasn't overhyped. And the ass-to-ass scene? People do more for free and post it online. I was worried more about her safety than anything else and then it was like "Oh. That's nothing. You should see people who take whole horse dildos in the ass recreationally for fun. Just make sure you fast and clean yourself out first."

Having worked with heroin addicts, I thought the movie came across as what someone whose only experience with heroin was what they learned in DARE would make.

Yeah it hasn’t aged well and after watching Perfect Blue it seems kind of damning how much was ripped from that. Perfect Blue btw is an absolutely amazing film if you haven’t seen it.

Aronofsky ripped black swan off perfect blue too

[–] very_poggers_gay@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago (1 children)

agreed that Perfect Blue is really good, but the SA/R scene was way over the top and i wish it wasn't in there

[–] Carcharodonna@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago

Thanks for mentioning this, as I sometimes forget to bring it up, though people should be aware of it before they go see it. I agree that scene is very uncomfortable and difficult to watch (very much intentional on the part of the director), but I personally felt like it did have a important role in the story and character development, and was a pretty key part of the film in general.

how's it a rip off? haven't seen perfect blue but the synopsis doesn't seem to have much in common with requiem

[–] Carcharodonna@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago

He basically ripped entire scenes from the movie without getting any kind of permission and then copied it again with Black Swan. Good article about it here: https://animationobsessive.substack.com/p/the-real-history-of-perfect-blue

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I'll have to check it out, thanks

[–] Carcharodonna@hexbear.net 5 points 5 days ago

Just a warning though, as someone else mentioned, big CW on this for an SA scene in the film that’s difficult to watch.

With how everyone always hyped it up I thought I was in for some deep insight and unforgettable experience, but it was just okay. There wasn't anything particularly shocking or notable about it.

"Ass to ass" and the nasty toilet dive are the only scenes I can vaguely remember.

[–] Azarova@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago (2 children)

nasty toilet dive

Are you thinking of Trainspotting? Which is also a movie about heroin, but takes place in Scotland.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 8 points 5 days ago

And is actually good iirc

[–] AZERTY@feddit.nl 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ah yes I am definitely mixing them up, thank you!

[–] Calmrade@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

I actually remembered the same scene and had to figure out which movie it was from.

[–] gramxi@hexbear.net 12 points 5 days ago

it was notable for an era where you had reruns of Forrest Gump and Con-Air instead of Netflix

[–] hollowmines@hexbear.net 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

cool score. obnoxious movie, though I have a soft spot for aronofsky just for how all-in his movies are even when they're not exactly....good. (new "goofy" one w austin butler looks horrible though)

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yeah the score was fantastic. I liked Black Swan too. I'm normally all in favour of indulgent, artsy cinema β€” but this one just didn't do it for me

[–] grendahlgrendahlgen@hexbear.net 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

How do you feel about The Fountain? It's one of Aronofsky's most reviled, but I've always loved it for it's indulgent artsiness.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I haven't seen it. I think the only other film of his I've seen is Noah, which was a bit rubbish imo (but I wasn't expecting any better from that one)

EDIT: I just checked and I also saw Pi years and years ago, and thought it was a load of old shit lol. I guess I'm just not an Aronofsky head

[–] Eldritch@hexbear.net 9 points 5 days ago

It's an hour and a half anti-drug government ad. Like I'm not promoting them but there's better ways of making people aware of the risks without insulting their intelligence.

I thought the character of the mother was pretty good, her addiction to television and the use pharmaceuticals to cope with her life. Also fwiw, just saw some headlines about Jared Leto sexual misconduct allegations.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

Honestly wish it was just a movie focused entirely on her. It's horrifying what the elderly can experience when they're on their own. Gene Hackman's recent death comes to mind. Guy was a famous celebrity and he and his wife had been dead for days before anyone found them.

The mother character has really stuck with me. By far the best part of the movie.

[–] Robert_Kennedy_Jr@hexbear.net 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I really loved the soundtrack outside of the tuba stuff during the mom's hallucinations, but yeah the movie is generally forgettable.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago

Yeah the score slaps

[–] miz@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

that movie sucks. about as fun as getting kicked in the stomach for 90 minutes

[–] Tychoxii@hexbear.net 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Clint Mansell soundtrack tho

[–] InappropriateEmote@hexbear.net 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

For real. I have to say also that it was fascinating watching the frontman for Pop Will Eat Itself, (a band that in the 90s made an Antifa song* a hit in Gammon Isle) go on to become arguably one of the greatest contemporary film score composers.

[–] Tychoxii@hexbear.net 2 points 4 days ago

Yeah The Fountain soundtrack remains one of my favorite things.

PWEI was a little too avant garde for my taste, but i will check that song outl
