Evanescence? Is that like a bottled water brand?

Save me from this nothing I've become!

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 4 days ago

If I could spell out in onomatopoeia form the guitar riff and background vocals to this part, I totally would, because I can hear it clearly in my mind

[–] 2piradians@lemmy.world 11 points 4 days ago

I lived in England at that time and what my coworkers heard was

WANK ME OFF!

I CAN'T WANK OFF!

Hilarious to me, especially since it summed up my thoughts on the song.

Is that how saltpeter forms?

[–] FavouriteShapes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think that might be a regional nickname for it - it does indeed form salts which are loosened from the inside of the brick/concrete (both have salts in) by water, and then transported to the outside by the same water.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I can't find anything relating saltpeter to the term "evanescence" but I know it forms due to humidity + capillarity in stone/brick walls (I recently moved into a house that has some so I only recently started learning about this) so I guess it is the same thing. The scientific name for it is potassium nitrate

Well that explains it

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

How could you not know Evanescence? They just dropped some new singles and they sound as good as ever. One of the songs even topped the Billboard Alternative charts. So it's not like they went anywhere.

[–] CuddlesMcBubblefun@lemmy.world 14 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Of course I have! Hybrid Theory is one of my favorite albums of all time.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 6 points 4 days ago

You bastard

[–] Noja@sopuli.xyz 2 points 4 days ago

I also like divorced dad rock

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (4 children)

I'm pretty sure they are still an active band on radio rotation. It's not like asking "Ever heard of Hot Action Cop?

[–] RidderSport@feddit.org 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They released a new album in June this year

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is the original joke that Evanescence is actually still popular in rock, so asking makes you look silly?

Evanescence literally had two #1 hits over the past two years.

People who listen to rock music have definitely heard of Evanescence.

[–] Venator@lemmy.nz 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I wouldn't say definitely based on hits charts: people can be pretty unaware of culturally significant bands quite easily by only using streaming services...

[–] calliope@retrolemmy.com 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Oh never mind these Evanescence hits are on airplay! Ignore this

~~Billboard has counted streams for years. Sales, streams, and airplay.~~

News this year was that Billboard stopped counting YouTube streams because Google was trying to throw their weight around to affect the charts. Which I thought was interesting.

[–] anomnom@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago

Active on radio? You mean that thing with all the knobs on my grandma’s book shelf?

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I literally only know them from the video game Burnout

They just released a new album this year which is pretty good. Plus heaps of "the youth" around my way ate wearing limp bizkit, korn and deftones merch, so maybe?

[–] robear@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Just like kids in the 2000s wore Nirvana shirts. Retro. Vintage.

[–] Geobloke@aussie.zone 3 points 3 days ago

I was a kid then, loved nirvana and would've worn a shirt if I could dead with being called a poser

I went to a Within Temptation concert. Evanescence was their low profile opening act. They played their old stuff and some of us millennials got hyped. No one cared when they played new stuff.

The sad truth is that Goth metal is a very niche taste and Evanescence is old news.

[–] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 4 days ago

Sounds like a crowd problem.

The crowd should check out Evanescence's new stuff, it's good.

Really just get a video on tiktok with one of their songs. The amount of older music gen alpha listens to because they saw it on tiktok is insane.

[–] MrFlibble4747@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 days ago

Eat my Kerala Dust!

Honestly maybe it's because I'm a horrid autistic Gen Z that didn't really like music until I play NV but even with my modern horrid niche tastes I still don't get why folks like/ liked Evanescence. Now if you'll excuse me I'm gonna go back to listening to Korpiklaani.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (5 children)

Obsessively watched Dream Too Much with baby son. Years later tween son fills house with metal... Including Evanescence. Long con. In fact, if you have a metal newborn, check out Rockabye Baby - artists grownups love across genres in muzac versions for babies.

Yes I have! The video clip where she hangs on the windows almost ready to fall, is something I will always remember. It was a big hit back then.

[–] Maultasche@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

Maybe they've heard of Cryoshell

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 4 points 4 days ago (6 children)

Where they really that big of a deal? They had that one song that was a tie into that forgettable Ben Affleck Daredevil movie.

[–] valar@lemmy.ca 6 points 4 days ago

Yes, yes they were.

[–] OpenStars@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

They used to be really good!

They still are now, but they used to be too.

[–] riquisimo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 4 days ago

They Where.

[–] WalleyeWarrior@midwest.social 3 points 4 days ago

Clearly you were never in the MidWest during the 2000's

Wait they are this band for young mainstream people who think they are metalheads, no? ... [unintelligible zombie noises]
