THE POLICE PROBLEM

3318 readers
1268 users here now

The police problem is that police are policed by the police. Cops are accountable only to other cops, which is no accountability at all.

99.9999% of police brutality, corruption, and misconduct is never investigated, never punished, never makes the news, so it's not on this page.

When cops are caught breaking the law, they're investigated by other cops. Details are kept quiet, the officers' names are withheld from public knowledge, and what info is eventually released is only what police choose to release — often nothing at all.

When police are fired — which is all too rare — they leave with 'law enforcement experience' and can easily find work in another police department nearby. It's called "Wandering Cops."

When police testify under oath, they lie so frequently that cops themselves have a joking term for it: "testilying." Yet it's almost unheard of for police to be punished or prosecuted for perjury.

Cops can and do get away with lawlessness, because cops protect other cops. If they don't, they aren't cops for long.

The legal doctrine of "qualified immunity" renders police officers invulnerable to lawsuits for almost anything they do. In practice, getting past 'qualified immunity' is so unlikely, it makes headlines when it happens.

All this is a path to a police state.

In a free society, police must always be under serious and skeptical public oversight, with non-cops and non-cronies in charge, issuing genuine punishment when warranted.

Police who break the law must be prosecuted like anyone else, promptly fired if guilty, and barred from ever working in law-enforcement again.

    That's the solution.

Our definition of ‘cops’ is broad, and includes prison guards, probation officers, shitty DAs and judges, etc — anyone who has the authority to fuck over people’s lives, with minimal or no oversight.

RULES

Real-life decorum is expected. Please don't say things only a child or a jackass would say in person.

If you're here to support the police, you're trolling. Please exercise your right to remain silent.

Saying ~~cops~~ ANYONE should be killed lowers the IQ in any conversation. They're about killing people; we're not.

Please don't dox or post calls for harassment, vigilantism, tar & feather attacks, etc.

Please also abide by the instance rules.

It you've been banned but don't know why, check the moderator's log. If you feel you didn't deserve it, hey, I'm new at this and maybe you're right. Send a cordial PM, for a second chance.

My wife was plating this on her phone and I seriously thought it was a comedy bit. That fucking guy is a fascist piece of shit.

[–] Bloomcole@lemmy.world 0 points 2 hours ago

Did you not know by the uniform?

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago

I was at a protest earlier to day. We walked down the streets and kept getting followed by dudes revving their engines.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 12 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Weirdest shit was the time I was drunk with a cop buddy. With his cop friends. Who were also getting loose lips and telling stories and one of them checked them all and said. I wasn’t a cop. And not to talk about that stuff around me. Still bothers me. I never saw that friend again. But ya. Wild stuff.

They were getting a little too real with their stories. Of getting shot at and doing overall terrible vile actions.

Fuck these coward facist pigs, slave catchers, strike breakers, class traitors. Protectors of cancerous capitalist ruling class .

Can you imagine tabling this evidence in a civil case against police brutality. It would be a slam dunk if the US police were accountable like in civilised countries. The fact that they can say it out loud is indicative that the US is beyind fucked.

The US has gone from my let's organize an intervention for that fuck up friend list to their fucking poison and will drag the rest of us down with them if we don't keep our distance.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 3 points 7 hours ago

"Police" and "accountable" in the same sentence? In civilized countries it usually takes years and people have to fight the public opinion, politicians' PR machine and hope that they'll find a reasonable judge.

[–] Cocopanda@lemmy.world 22 points 12 hours ago

Cool. Then I expect there to be plenty of bacon 6 feet under. If the police are going to kill Americans for no legal reason. I expect the Americans to do what Americans do and fight back.

Squeeeeel for me boy. Squeeeeeel!

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 9 points 11 hours ago

Sound to me like Florida is going to be legislating firearm restrictions later this year.

[–] WoodScientist@sh.itjust.works 47 points 15 hours ago

Well, you heard it here. It's perfectly fine to shoot cops with AR-15s if they shoot you with rubber bullets. If they can kill you for tossing a brick, you can kill them for shooting people unprovoked with "less lethal" munitions. Those rubber bullets are just as dangerous as bricks, and the cops are shooting them with impunity. By their own logic, any officer that shoots a rubber bullet at someone deserves to have their head blown off.

Profoundly stupid for this fool to show his face on camera while openly threatening to kill American citizens.

But he's a Trump supporter, so being profoundly stupid is par for the course.

If things actually did pop off in this country, anyone that has shown their face on camera in opposition to the American people will not be safe.

[–] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 2 points 7 hours ago

Dude, they'll be given an amnesty and remain where they are.

This dumb fuck just opened up a world of extra legal fun.

Really hoping someone guns down a nosy PIG abusing their authority and then claims castle doctrine - I mean it’s right there, that dumb pig fuck straight up told you the cops will illegally kill you if you feel like it, and castle doctrine allows you to defend yourself….

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 11 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

in a logical world that would stand to reason, but this is desantisland, where they'll simply drop a bomb on your house or roll an APC through it. any resistance from the people will be curbstomped because they know they have to make examples if they want to remain in control.

edit: aww the downvote from desantisland makes me laugh

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (1 children)

The person to try something like that is not likely to have a lot of capital tied up in any kind of permanent residence.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 3 points 8 hours ago

what makes you take that leap of reasoning?

there are plenty of homeowners in FL who fucking despise ronnyboy.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 11 points 13 hours ago

So I always though it would be neat if a few drones with laser pointers would orientate their lazers at any cops with particularly egregious records.

You know... Just so people can watch out for them.

[–] Philzlaus@lemmy.world -5 points 5 hours ago (2 children)

No one in this forum who calls for violence against other people and sometimes for the killing of cops is even a bit better than this brain-dead sheriff. American society is so deeply divided.

[–] Doc_Crankenstein@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 hours ago

Opposing a militant regime seeking to do harm to you and yours is not the same as enacting systemic violence to oppress marginalized people.

If cops and the state are gonna call to kill protestors then protestors and the people being targeted can call to arm themselves to defend against it.

Yes, America is divided. For good reason.

[–] Ithorian@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago

Indeed, no hope for America and Americans. This is a civil war that can take decades to heal

[–] Phoenicianpirate@lemm.ee 63 points 18 hours ago (22 children)

This is why I went from supporting gun control to not supporting it anymore. Cops should absolutely fear armed protesters in all countries.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 23 points 17 hours ago

Yup.

Been for strict gun control all my life. And, in a decent country, I still would be.

But this isn't a decent country. It's a country full of low-IQ fools and fascists and racists, so it's time to get armed and prepare for the worst, which appears to be where we're headed.

There it is. Law enforcement has openly declared to kill protesters. You now know that you must fight them like your life depends on it, because they have admitted their intent.

This is exactly the behavior your 2nd amendment rights are meant to protect you from. They are ready & excited to kill you. What are you willing to do to stop them?

America is cooked.

Peaceful protest? Nah. Violent insurrection.

you don't matter to them and they think the only opinion you should have is theirs

Anything that violates that makes you a threat to national security, a terrorist, and a criminal. If they won't respect the rule of law, neither should you.

Defund the police. Fire everyone on that police force. They're all rotten and crooked.

.... It won't happen since the owners of America actually want this to happen.

Here's the fact: one way or another they finally put someone who is mentally insane enough to push their policies, into the Whitehouse. Now that he's there, they will push their beliefs onto everyone as a matter of law. If you obey the law, they'll win by default since the laws are currently theirs to control. If you protest and revolt, it's a violent terrorist insurrection that must be quelled, and you become a military dictatorship and the same outcome happens as before, but now with more guns and violence. You can't win by doing nothing. You can't win by doing something.

You can't win.

Also, "they" in this context is the people who have long since bought and paid for the house, the Senate, the supreme Court, the police, the feds.... They're the corporate interests that are hostile to your continued existence and freedom. You can exist but only as they permit. Freedom is actively being robbed from the American people.

If any of this is shocking or unclear to you, then I'm afraid you're not paying attention.

[–] knekko@lemmy.world 11 points 15 hours ago

... I don't think a democratic society can survive if this is the attitude of the law inforcement.

[–] wulrus@lemmy.world 17 points 17 hours ago

That is a weird understanding of the law. As any elementary school kid (outside the US) knows: Doesn't matter if the suspect stole a chewing gum or killed someone - they need to be stopped and arrested with the least harm possible.

Punishment is done by the courts. Not a police job.

[–] Owlboi@lemm.ee 192 points 1 day ago (1 children)

just saying this would be reason enough for him to lose his job in any civilized country

I hope the reply from protestors is...

We will kill you

If you forget that you are public servants, and you ignore our Constitutional rights, then you have no authority under that same Constitution.

If you hit one of us, then we are going to hit back, and we outnumber you 50-1. If you let the dogs loose on us, then we will kill the dogs, and the officer that looses them, as this is a lethal action with the intent of bodily harm.

If you gas us, or shoot us with "less lethal" weapons, then we will defend ourselves with as much force as necessary. We are exercising our rights as citizens, you are public servants with the express purpose of protecting citizens and upholding our rights. Police authority is written on the back of the social contract that enshrines our rights. You can't rip up one without ripping up the other.

See you motheruckers on the street.

PS. Every protestor there ought to show up with an open carry, preferably a longarm.
