Binface has 4-1 odds to win, so there seems to be a very real chance he wins this election.

Which would be absolutely hilarious.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 82 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's Count Binface. For now. I don't think that a peer can serve in the House of Commons, so I think that he might just have to give up his title and serve as Binface if elected.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 69 points 1 week ago (6 children)

"Count" is not a valid title in the British peerage. The equivalent rank in the UK is "earl". Though if he wins, I think it'd be a moment of immense cultural significance so he should immediately be elevated to the Lords as a life peer, just to make the title official. He can be Britain's only living count.

Hmm. Apparently in said system, the wife of an earl is a countess.

Ah.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl

The Norman-derived equivalent count (from Latin comes) was not introduced following the Norman Conquest of England though countess was and is used for the female title. Geoffrey Hughes writes, "It is a likely speculation that the Norman French title 'Count' was abandoned in England in favour of the Germanic 'Earl' [...] precisely because of the uncomfortable phonetic proximity to cunt".[7]

I imagine that Count Binface simply doesn't fear such proximity.

To think we were this close to having Count Grey tea...

(nothing funny about it, just fun to imagine an alternative timeline)

That's Count Binface!

Who is offering 4:1 odds on Count Binface? The major betting markets have him at around 8% last I checked earlier today.

Edit: This is about gambling odds not polls

Binface has

How dare you disrecpect the Count by omitting his title! Learn manners peasant!

[–] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 90 points 1 week ago (2 children)

If Count Binface wins, he'll never be able to show his face in public again.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago (2 children)

He'll shirk back into his hole for two years and then pop back out as the leader of the new right-wing insurgent political party "Rejuvenate Britain" or something.

I read some speculation today that British election law might be interpreted to mean that if Jon Harvey wins the election as Count Binface, then he would not only be permitted to wear the Binface costume and persona while sitting in the house but he would be required to. Since it's Count Binface that the people chose and gave the mandate to, not some regular old human schlub named Jon Harvey.

Presumably there'd be nothing wrong with him taking it off when not on official business and having a secret identity that way, but for votes and whatnot he'd have to don the cape and bin.

[–] worhui@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is there a nationality requirement for the position?

Count binface is not British, he is a space alien.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 18 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Why can't a space alien be British?

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 15 points 1 week ago

I see someone has been watching Doctor Who.

Which is the right thing too.

Clacton has never been an important place in history. For the most part, Clacton was an irrelevant back corner that nobody cared about.

The people of Clacton have been giften an unique opportunity to change that forever. If Clacton votes for the intergalactic space lord Count Binface, the name Clacton-on-Sea will never be forgotten.

[–] Fedizen@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Clacton would also be the first place ruled by an intergalactic bin. A small step for bins. A tremendous leap for binkind

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 12 points 1 week ago

Of course if Clapton hadn't voted for the joke candidate the first time around they wouldn't be in this position.

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The BBC interview with Count Binface yesterday was really good.

The title should have been: Farage, left, fighting a trash can.

I set my hopes on Count Binface. Although if he actually wins, he will face an interesting challenge in parliament. As far I remember, hats (and probably helmets, too) are not allowed in the House.

[–] TroublesomeTalker@feddit.uk 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Sinn fein just don't turn up - can't he do the same?

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I feel like his novelty would wear off if he actually appeared in Parliament. He'd probably be told that the costume won't be allowed and then become an abstentionist in protest.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Don't be pessimistic. Look up Martin Sonneborn, MEP. He got voted into the EU parliament in 2015 with his purely satirical party "Die PARTEI" and is still there, because he does a comparatively good job. While still being satirical.

do they think that Nigel’s running a cunning stunt

This is deliberate, isn't it? He wants people to think "Nigel’s a stunning cunt"? Good one

Lord Buckethead (briefly) went on Last Week Tonight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fyVz5vgqBhE&t=981

I feel like Count Binface should stop trying to dodge the international press and do so himself.

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 59 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Lord Buckethead and Count Binface are one and the same person, the actor had to stop using "Lord Buckethead" for IP reasons.

[–] swab148@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Prog metal guitarist, for anyone wondering.

[–] br3d@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

In an interview, Harvey said it was Buckethead in SpaceBalls, the film, that was the issue

But the decision was quickly dismissed by his usual sparring partners. The UK’s main political parties – the ruling Labour Party, the right-wing Conservative Party and the centrist Liberal Democrats – all announced they would boycott the Clacton vote.

What would happen to the election if Farage was the only candidate?

[–] NateNate60@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Then he's guaranteed to win and will be declared elected.

[–] Psaldorn@lemmy.world 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

And the investigation into him by the ministerial will continue

[–] mereo@piefed.ca 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ah, so this is to prevent any distractions from the investigation. Got it.

[–] Kushan@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Pretty much, also means Farage can't claim that the people have shown they don't care about his money because he was voted in a second time.

What can happen is if Farage wins, the investigation continues and there's a very real chance he'll be suspended so another election will be called.

Each election costs about 450k of public money, so Count Binface can say that just by electing him and him doing literally nothing, he's saving the public nearly half a million quid.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

At least there's one candidate who isn't pretending it's not a clown show.

[–] Kintarian@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I’m sorry, not from the UK. Which one is the trash can?

[–] Washi@lemmy.world 13 points 1 week ago

Why isn't the HMRC investigating and taking money from him. If I owe HMRC 50 pence they will fine me and want every penny but politicians can launder billions of pounds and not a peep from the scumbag HMRC.
