Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in !yurop@lemm.ee. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @federalreverse@feddit.org, @poVoq@slrpnk.net, or @anzo@programming.dev.

"Sooner or later, we will sit at the negotiation table with the U.S. and find a mutually acceptable compromise," EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic told a news conference.

He also said the EU would start would start collecting a first tranche of targeted retaliatory duties on U.S. imports from April 15 and a second wave from May 15, in reaction to the U.S. tariffs on European steel and aluminium.

He also made clear that while preferring to negotiate the removal of the tariffs with the U.S., the EU was ready to step up its response. This could include the EU's Anti-Coercion Instrument (ACI), which would allow it to target U.S. services or to limit U.S. companies' access to public procurement tenders in the EU.

I see this as doubling down on not being responsible for this mess, giving Trump a way out. Personally don't think he'll take any deal proposed by the EU, but who knows. With this proposal, EU and national leaders can rightfully say they did their best to mitigate the damage. Here's how Von Der Leyen said it:

"We stand ready to negotiate with the US. Indeed, we have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrial goods as we have successfully done with many other trading partners," the Commission president said on Monday afternoon.

"Because Europe is always ready for a good deal. So we keep it on the table. But we are also prepared to respond through countermeasures and defend our interests."

I agree. On social media they posted this:

Europe is ready to negotiate with the US.

We have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrial goods, because we're always ready for a good deal.

But we’re also prepared to respond with countermeasures and protect ourselves against indirect effects through trade diversion.

We will focus on the 83% of global trade beyond the US.

Europe stands together for our businesses and with our businesses for all Europeans in the EU and beyond.

They need to use his language and call it a "deal".

Well, it'd only be a deal, if it was very advantageous and good for us, but bad for the US - if they're really trying to speak his language Β―\_(ツ)_/Β―

It sure makes Trump look bad, putting the diplomatic ball in his court.

But how is that any different from how all of Trump's foreign dealings played out these last weeks? And how did he react? 🀷
