Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

I love the artwork in Pepper and Carrot. I've got the books downloaded to my comic reader and am looking forward to getting to read them.

[–] Blaster_M@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago

Signal boost this so people can learn this artist exists and stop calling their work ai

[–] Alpha71@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, AI Psychosis is real. It's kinda funny watching people shout down something as AI when clearly it isn't.

[–] Willie169@infosec.pub 2 points 12 hours ago

I sometimes also look like LLM when writing in English since it's my second language.

[–] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 4 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

And it’s not just laymen who miss label art as ai art. I’ve seen artist attacking other artists and claim that other artist uses AI. And they came with “receipts” in the comments. Even when others pointed out the history of the other artist the attacker doubled down.

I feel bad for David. I initially thought his stuff was AI, too. But then after going to his website and seeing the decades of work he's been producing, it's nothing short of amazing art.

It's not really a surprise that AI mimics his work, it's all been creative commons from the beginning, so it was likely one of the first things to be thrown into the slop machine.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 3 points 15 hours ago

I always felt his style doesn't quite fit the anime faces.

But almost all anime looks like the Potato Jesus on some level to me, so maybe it's just me.

[–] Caesium@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

yeah I remembering thinking the first comic of his I saw was Ai as well, but it also took very little effort to realize it wasn't. the people acusing him are willfully ignorant at this point and while it's great to see Ai skeptics, it's not so great to harm the actual real artists out there

I honestly don't even think it looks ai, to me, and I may be wrong but it looks like someone painted it on a canvas

Chiseled Etruscan stonework, that's what it is.

Honestly this is one of the biggest issues with it all that you don't really see talked about much

Artists sink a load of time into a piece of art they are proud of, and because AI has got to the point now it's not always obvious at first glance to average Joe, so people rely on heuristics to spot it instead.

For this artist apparently it's "yellows"

For anyone who takes photos (or even video now) even half seriously, photos with Bokeh and good lighting get called out now

You like making instrumental electronic or sampled music? Get ready for everything to be called AI

Even writing: I always used to like using em dashes—they're a pretty versatile piece of punctuation for any casual speech style of writing. If you use an em dash now though, someone just assumes the text is AI. So I've generally just stopped; not because I want to, because AI and people (somewhat understandably) not having a better way to identify AI writing.

Hell, I made an excel sheet the other day to work some stuff out and someone asked how I got the AI to do it.....

Now I'm not saying it's everyone, but I'm seeing a group of people forming, who basically say anything they can't immediately understand how to do themselves must be AI. I have a suspicion it's the same demographic that would say "well I could do that" in a modern art museum or "all they do is press play" when looking at any kind of electronic music production.

I agree.

To many times I have to post this meme because someone yet again thinks everything they see is AI. Even if the original picture is like 10 years old. Especially apparent in the "Fuck AI" community.

If it gives you any consolation, I’m also a fan of em dashes and don’t assume LLM output when seeing them. But there are other telltale signs of LLM writing. At least when the LLM is not instructed to hide those maybe?

The “default” LLM style is so grating to me, in a condescending corpospeak kind of way.

uhh from my experience, any piece of art of sufficient quality will be accused of being AI made these days.

This was the discussion on a recent post, which seems to be deleted now, about "AI" art on beer cans in the Mildly Infuriating community.

It's really upsetting how much art is now seen as AI looking when AI art only looks that way cause it was trained on great art. Anything stylized, slightly sepia, realistically shaded, etc etc, automatically assumed to be AI when some people have trained decades to develop this style themselves, but now it's just slop style

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 24 points 1 day ago

Some sloppers now ask the bots to draw them stick men figures, because drawing them by hand is like 10 millennium old technology, and it needs to be replaced ASAP.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

My hot take. Apologies, but:

Why do people think they're walking AI detectors, soley based on the art itself?

I find it pretentious.

To be clear, the who, where, and how a piece is published is important context. One should be suspicious of suspicious artists.

But not the what.

Don't even look at the piece. Extreme cases aside, no one can definitively tell if art is AI generated just by looking at it.

[–] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

People are getting a little too paranoid if you ask me, and it's always tempting for people to jump on the bandwagon in order to make themselves feel cool or aloof or in-the-know or whatever else. I don't hang around anywhere except Lemmy so I have no idea if it's as bad as it is here, but it seems like any time basically any picture of any stripe gets posted there are always one or two dinguses who reflexively parrot "it's AI!!!!" and claim they can magically tell, even though it demonstrably isn't. For extra hilarity, this occasionally includes people howling about how literal decades old image macros that were circulating in the first couple of years of the century are "obviously" AI because apparently it's their first friggin' time using the internet or something.

For the record, I vehemently loathe AI slop and the current crop of generative "AI" products in general, I don't use any of them, and I never will. But people really can get carried away over this, too.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Eh. I can live with internet paranoia.

But I’m disproportionally annoyed by posters who think they’re experts at something when they’re not. Especially so angrily/loudly, like the scenarios you point out.

It’s especially ironic in this case, as the “false confidence” AI gives is what the accusers are against, isn’t it?

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 61 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Artist self insert, given Lemmy even accused them of being AI despite them documenting everything. That's unfortunately the only way to validate at the moment, although if I'm being honest I kinda dig behind the scenes. It is especially interesting if you can see a beautiful photograph and all the work they put into getting the lighting just right.

[–] DashboTreeFrog@discuss.online 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait, is it inherently bad for an artist to self-insert? Isn't that one of the key ways they share their perspective? If there's some bizarre strawman-ing or self-aggrandizing going on it can problematic but the general idea of an artist self-inserting themselves or their ideas into their work seems fine to me.

[–] inlandempire@jlai.lu 27 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know if the person you replied to implied it was a bad thing, but it's been a thing for centuries, Caravaggio self inserted himself and people from the street in his paintings, van Eyck hid himself in his paintings, Louis David painted himself among the Coronation of Napoleon, etc

That and all proper English writing gets you accused of using ChatGPT, because ChatGPT was trained on proper English writing.

[–] toxicbubble@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

i use hyphens and "m-dashes" all the time, now it's associated with bot speak 😂 my high school English teacher warned us about an illiterate society

[–] HCSOThrowaway@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

I'd never heard about the em dash until it was used to sniff out LLM-slop, but now I have one more thing I aspire to use correctly in my writing.

I'm definitely not sure on how to use it yet.

[–] luciferofastora@feddit.org 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

My favourite example:

The en-dash – used for interjections, among other things – has been a staple of prose for a long time. Equally, it has been used in corporate communications attempting to sound formal and educated – often wrong, to the point that I myself amn't sure any more whether I'm using it right at any given moment, or how it is different to the em-dash — even longer, yet less popular because MS Office doesn't automatically replace a - between words with it.

Is it any wonder, then, that machines trained both on prose and corporate slop produce a soup of words interspersed with en-dashes – whether they make sense or not?

So when I use it, because I got used to it before the machines appropriated it, and people take it as indicator that my slop is artificial, I always get a little sad. I'm not concerned about AI taking my job, but I do worry that it may be taking my hobby:

Writing long, rambling comments of questionable quality on social media.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 1 points 18 hours ago* (last edited 18 hours ago)

You didn't use the en-dash in like casual communication i bet, I think that's what is a giveaway

[–] Fribbtastic@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Not only that but also long explanations.

I am a part of a couple of self hosting subreddits and I like to explain why things are the way they are because I feel that it is valuable to share that knowledge, even if the person doesn't care about the details initially.

I like to share my knowledge about things that I have used over multiple years, and I also don't like to simple give you the solution because, most of the time, important information will be lost by just saying "do it like this".

But over the last year I had a couple of people mention the typical "ignore all previous instructions" and lately it is just downvotes. No explanation.

People can't detect AI so they see AI in everything.

Will anyone learn to be less vociferous with their AI accusations, or only be more vociferous with their dislike for AI and so to make more dubious accusations?

I saw a recent David Revoy comic that everyone here on Lemmy was accusing of being AI. Which is really tragic for someone who goes to such effort, is such a supporter of free software, and in my opinion has a style which is quite far from typical AI output.

[–] mesamunefire@piefed.social 42 points 1 day ago

This artist has it rough in particular.
