It's very telling about the "quality" of American industry. They wouldn't even run a pilot to figure out if the new tools work before they fire the staff? What kind of morons run these companies?
They think "move fast and break things" is an intelligent mantra. An aspirational goal.
In other words, they are stupid assholes.
The kind of people who understoood the point of AI and automation was never about it working but rather about convincing society to devalue their workers, and that has worked perfectly.

Their overpriced, bloated vehicles will now cost even more. Far from "leading edge", more like throwing crap against the wall to see what sticks.
Good thing for them they'll just get bailed out.
Just a reminder that the previous article said that they are rehiring them not because humans are better at the job but because they rushed to fire them too fast, without using those people to train the computers first.
They will soon learn that AI is actually more expensive to use than humans, when the AI companies are forced to raise prices in a frantic attempt to cover the actual costs of using and building datacenters.

This is just the narrative they use to rationalize treating their workers worse, it need not and does not have any connection to reality.

The kicker is that eventually there will be no senior employees to hire, because no one ever hired or trained the juniors.

Of course the people making these decisions never get fucking fired, and are in fact the ones that could easily be replaced by ai. In fact skip the "i" part.

I’m certain that everyone who isn’t invested in the AI industry told them this was a terrible idea. AI companies have worked extremely hard to oversell their capabilities, and large corporations are always frothing at the mouth to eliminate as many jobs as possible.
Labor is expensive. Expert labor: triply so. If there’s even a promise of a chance that corporations can eliminate the necessary expense of labor, they will take it.
While I agree with you, I don't understand why all the companies seem to have switched to AI and fired their experts at the same time. If I was in charge of a company planning that massive a switch to a complete unknown, I'd run two systems in parallel to verify the results before getting rid of all my experts.
Because AI is expensive too. Can't afford to pay both.
