It's a good example of how conservatives will say anything to chase their desired effects.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 17 points 6 days ago

And so much of that simply to keep their base's sense of outrage / specious superiority burning.

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 30 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Obviously the dumbest of controversies.

But also, I like the dark suit look better. Article has pics of Obama, Reagan, and HW in tan suits, and they all look worse than the dark suits. I think it clashes with their skin tones, but also it blends in too easily with the walls behind all of them.

He said, wearing a pair of shorts he got at the thrift shop with a bit of string for a belt.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 19 points 6 days ago

well la de da look at mr. fancy pants over here getting his clothes at the thrift store instead of grave robbing like the rest of us

This article needs to give some cultural context. I read it all and I still don't understand why there was a controversy.

Is it because tan is considered less formal?

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 18 points 6 days ago

Obama being elected broke a lot of R's brains and them and Fox News were looking for anything, anything to cast aspersions on him for. Early on a Fox news commentator called a fist bump he shared with his wife a 'terrorist fist jab'. Just absolutely silly people.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

controversy

if any other president had worn it, it wouldn't have been controversial - but everything is controversial when the president is black and the GOP is racist as all fuck

[–] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I understand that, but there must be something to base it on? A reason why it could possibly be seen as somewhat not OK to wear tan in this context?

[–] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Back then they said he look like a used car salesman. But keep in mind Regan wore a tan suit too.

The outrage was over anything. Like Obama wearing loose jeans because he lost weight during presidency. Or Michelle making monkey noises to amuse daughter.

You can tell its dishonest because look at 47 and their comments. Total 180.

[–] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

I want to make clear that I totally understand that there's a clear double standard, as there's always is with Democrats, moreso if there're not white.

But also thanks, the "used car salesman" thing is the kind of context I was looking for. It doesn't justify it but helps me understand what they're even basing their criticism on.

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

He was talking about serious things and tan is an unserious color. It's never okay for a president to act unserious unless he's a white male Republican, in which case it's fine.

Racism is the context, the justification, and the motive. It's not really much more than that.

[–] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

I understand that Republicans are racist and use racism as a weapon. But "tan is an unserious color" is the kind of context I was looking for and helps me understand what they're even basing their attack on. Thanks!

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

racism. pure bullshit racism.

[–] eah@programming.dev 2 points 5 days ago

It was unusual. You can imagine the intrigue that would occur if Trump did something like this. Why the tan suit? What is he distracting us from? Step out of your subjective shoes for a moment. The blue team hates the red team. The red team hates the blue team. Just about anything out of the ordinary the other team does is controversial. It's exacerbated by the sensationalist media who want your ears and eyeballs to show you ads and by politicians who will make a big stink about everything to keep you paying attention to them so that you remember to vote for them in the next election.

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago

I think because tan = white and a white suit seems like a pimp or smth?

[–] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The people who complained about it are racist/bigotted and don't like Obama because he's black. At the time it wasn't really socailly acceptable to be publicly racist so they would make a big deal out of other stupid random shit directed at him. They would not have cared at all about the tan suit if Obama was white.

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 1 points 5 days ago

That's why his fist bumps with his wife was "terrorist fist jab" and he was joked for liking Dijon on his hot dog.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

No. Fox "News" just found nothing factual to criticise. So they complained about his clothing instead.

[–] terranoid@lemmy.cafe 19 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Your country unlocks a palette swap for your best fighter and you complain, smfh

[–] rimu@piefed.social 14 points 6 days ago (4 children)

I'm so sick of people who wear suits. In general.

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Sick cause you got no drip?

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 5 days ago

Nah, I got my drip when I wear my suit. That is why they call me

[–] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 5 days ago

right? If you wear a suit my opinion of you immediately drops by 20%

Just do 1950's men's fashion or something, that looks """professional""" but also like an actual normal person.

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 2 points 6 days ago

Sounds like a job for Comacho

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 1 points 5 days ago

Birthday suit?

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Obama has plenty of things to hate him for, hundreds of war crimes, betrayal of the workers in favor of the banks, support for torture but conservatives mild freakout about this has allowed liberals to pretend this is the worst he did and to ignore the many reasons he deserves a guillotine for his many crimes.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 19 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I wish he was president right now.

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

He would be funding genocide with poise and grace!

[–] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net -4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I also wish I had a shit sandwich instead of diarrhea soup garnished with gonorrhea pus, but that doesn’t make the shit sandwich good.

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 6 points 6 days ago

Thank fuck I don't get my politics from South Park.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world -3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Obama was objectively a good president. Probably one of the best since Jimmy Carter.

God leftists are insufferable.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Oh support imperialism, torture, brutality against refugees, bailing out the banks, you also oppose abortion rights and "leftists" are insufferable.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Are you going to pretend Obama was against woman’s choice now?

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

No just stating the fact he didn't care enough despite promises to enshrine roe v wade or even attempt to when he had the option.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Yeah he didn’t come to my house to clean my bathroom once during his term either.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Oh sure if I don't support bombing Middle East children I have no right to say anything against your god Obama

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world -2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Hey man I’m just hoping to have a clean bathroom.

[–] ThrowawayPermanente@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You know who else 'just wanted a clean bathroom'?

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Support sitting on your ass in your basement then. What have you done about it? Db0 all bitch and no bite.

[–] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz -3 points 6 days ago

Dude he's messing with you

[–] johan@feddit.nl 0 points 6 days ago

the many reasons he deserves a guillotine for his many crimes

Dude get a grip, this is absolutely bonkers and just a stupid as fuck take.

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The guy is executing people with drones and nobody cares, but he wears a tan suit and people freak out.

[–] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 5 days ago

His main opposition was actually a fan of the drone executions

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

He definitely looks smarter than the mustachioed lard with the pink necktie. Is it ALIVE?

[–] notsosure@sh.itjust.works 4 points 5 days ago

Only in the USA!

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 5 days ago
